App Maintenance Manchester
App maintenance keeps a published app installing, running and compliant as phones, stores and libraries change around it. We look after iOS and Android apps for Manchester businesses, including apps first built by another developer.

Why a finished app still needs looking after
An app that is left alone slowly stops working. Apple and Google ship major iOS and Android releases every year, and each one can change permissions, layouts or background behaviour. Google Play also sets target API level deadlines, and apps that miss them can no longer publish updates until they catch up.
Underneath, every app depends on SDKs and libraries for payments, maps, analytics and sign-in. Those get updated, deprecated and patched for security. On the Apple side, signing certificates and provisioning profiles expire and have to be renewed before you can ship a build.
Store policies change as well, and the backend needs its own security patches. Maintenance means somebody is watching all of this on your behalf.
Who uses our maintenance service
Most of the apps we maintain in Manchester belong to businesses without a developer on staff.
- Businesses whose original developer has moved on.
- Booking, ordering and membership apps where downtime means lost customers.
- Apps that have had a Play Console warning about target API level.
- Startups that launched an MVP and need regular releases without hiring.
- Organisations with internal staff apps that must keep working on new company phones.
How we take on and look after an app
Code and access review
We review the source, build setup, dependencies and store accounts, and confirm we can produce a working release.
Risk list
You get a written list of outdated libraries, upcoming deadlines, security issues and known bugs, in priority order.
Monitoring
We set up or connect crash reporting such as Firebase Crashlytics or Sentry, so problems surface before users report them.
Planned updates
We schedule work around yearly OS releases and Play deadlines, testing on current devices before each release.
Fixes and reporting
Bugs are logged, fixed and shipped, and you get a regular summary of what changed.
What is covered
- Compatibility updates for new iOS and Android versions.
- Target API level updates for Google Play.
- SDK and library upgrades, including security patches.
- Crash monitoring and bug fixing.
- Certificate and provisioning profile renewals.
- Responses to store policy changes and review messages.
- Backend server and database patching.
Taking over an app someone else built
Inherited apps are a large part of this work, and the first step is always a code review. Before changing anything, we need to know whether the project builds at all, which versions of the framework and libraries it uses, and where secrets such as API keys are stored.
We also check who controls the accounts. The Apple developer account, Google Play Console, domain, hosting and any third-party services should be in your name. If they sit in a former developer’s personal account, recovering them comes first, because without them nobody can publish an update.
Once that is settled, we fix the urgent items, then move onto a planned schedule. If the review shows the screens need more than patching, our app redesign service is the next step.
Frequently asked questions
What happens if I miss a Google Play target API deadline?
Google Play will stop accepting updates that target an old API level, so you cannot ship fixes until the app is brought up to date. We track each deadline and plan the upgrade work well ahead of it, testing on current devices first.
Do we need maintenance if the app has no bugs?
Yes, because the platform keeps moving even when your code does not. A yearly OS release or an expired certificate can stop an app installing or updating. Regular checks are less disruptive than discovering the problem when you urgently need to ship a change.
Can you maintain an app built with Flutter or React Native?
Yes. We work with native Swift and Kotlin apps and with cross-platform frameworks such as React Native and Flutter. The code review tells us how far behind the framework version is, which shapes how much upgrade work comes first.
How do we report a bug?
Email, phone or WhatsApp all work. Screenshots and the phone model help, but crash reporting usually gives us the technical detail already. We confirm the problem, agree the priority with you and let you know when the fix is released through the stores.
Is maintenance a contract or pay as you go?
We offer both. Apps that need regular updates usually suit a monthly arrangement with agreed hours, while quieter apps may only need scheduled checks around OS releases. We give you a fixed quote either way after the initial code review.
