Fitness App Development Manchester

We design and build fitness apps for gyms, coaches and fitness brands in Manchester and across the UK. Members get an exercise library, a training log and structured programmes that keep working on the gym floor, even in a basement with no signal.

What a workout tracking app has to get right

A fitness app is judged on its logging screen. Someone between sets wants to record weight and reps with one thumb, so the log shows last session’s numbers beside the current set, with rest timers close at hand.

Behind it sit an exercise library with demonstration videos, programmes split into weeks and sessions, and charts of volume, personal bests and attendance. Programmes and videos are stored on the device, and logged sets sync once signal returns.

With permission, we connect Apple HealthKit and Android Health Connect, which is also how most wearables share data. Subscriptions use store billing; see our app store submission page.

Fitness businesses we build for

Trainers coaching clients one to one may suit a personal trainer app better. These operators suit this one:

  • Independent gyms wanting members on gym-written programmes, not a generic third-party app.
  • Fitness brands and online coaches selling training plans by subscription.
  • Strength and conditioning coaches filming their own exercise library.
  • Workplace activity schemes with opt-in team challenges and leaderboards.
  • Equipment makers wanting a companion app showing how their kit is used.

How a fitness app build runs

1

Map the training model

We agree how programmes are structured: phases, weeks, sessions, supersets and rest periods, because this shapes the database.

2

Prototype the set logger

A few of your members try a clickable logging screen mid-workout, and we adjust it.

3

Build the exercise library

Coaches get an admin for uploading demonstrations, cues, equipment tags and alternatives.

4

Connect health platforms

We add HealthKit and Health Connect, requesting only the data types the app uses.

5

Test offline and submit

We test in airplane mode and with broken syncs, then prepare store listings and reviewer notes.

What is handed over at the end

  • iPhone and Android apps under your own developer accounts.
  • Web admin for exercises, videos and cues.
  • Programme builder for your coaches.
  • Offline storage with background sync.
  • HealthKit and Health Connect integration with clear permission prompts.
  • Store-billed subscriptions.
  • Source code, documentation and a data map for your privacy notice.

Handling health data in a fitness app

Workout logs can include heart rate and body measurements, which count as data concerning health. Under UK GDPR that is special category data, needing a lawful basis plus an additional condition, in a consumer app usually explicit consent. We set this up in line with published ICO guidance; take legal advice for your own situation.

Apple’s guidelines bar using HealthKit data for advertising, and we apply the same line on Android: health records never go to ad networks or profiling analytics. Data is encrypted, staff access is set by role, and users can export or delete their account inside the app. Our app backend work covers the server side.

Listings, onboarding and notifications describe what the app records and displays, never outcomes for the body.

Frequently asked questions

Will the app work in a gym with no phone signal?

Yes. The current programme and its videos download ahead of time. Sets are saved on the phone and sync when a connection returns, with checks so a session is never stored twice or lost if the app closes mid-sync.

Do we need HealthKit and Health Connect at launch?

Not always. Many fitness apps launch with their own workout log and add health syncing later. If wearable users are a big part of your audience, we include it at the start, since the permission screens are easier to get right once.

Can we upload our own exercise videos?

Yes. Coaches upload clips through the web admin, tag them by muscle group and equipment, and add written cues. You keep ownership of all footage, and nothing appears in the app until a coach marks it ready.

How do paid plans work inside a fitness app?

Programmes and videos sold inside the app are digital content, so they generally use App Store and Google Play billing. We set up tiers, trials and restore-purchase, and link store receipts to your server so access is right on every device.

Who owns the app, the code and the member data?

You do. The apps sit under your developer accounts, the source code is handed over, and member data lives in a database you control. While we support the app we act as your processor under a written agreement.
