Website Backup and Restore Manchester

A backup only matters if you can restore it. We set up website backups for Manchester businesses that cover files and database, keep copies away from your hosting account and get tested by actually restoring them, so a bad update, a hack or a host failure does not cost you the site.

Why so many website backups fail when needed

Plenty of sites rely on backups the host takes automatically, stored on the same server or in the same account. If the server fails, the account is suspended or someone gets into the control panel, those copies vanish too. Others use a plugin that saves files but not the database, or skips the uploads folder, and nobody notices until a restore is attempted.

A sound setup follows the 3-2-1 rule: three copies of your data, on two different kinds of storage, with one off-site. For a website that usually means the live site, a recent copy with the host and a separate copy in cloud storage the host cannot touch. Retention matters too. If a hack goes unnoticed for weeks, a schedule that keeps only a few days of copies leaves you with nothing clean.

Shops need extra care. A WooCommerce store takes orders all day, and restoring an older backup would wipe every order placed since, so stores get more frequent database backups.

Sites that need proper backups

Any site that would be slow or painful to rebuild, especially:

  • Online shops with order and customer data changing constantly
  • Sites with years of blog posts and product content
  • Membership and booking sites storing user accounts
  • Businesses on shared hosting with nothing beyond the host’s copies
  • Owners planning a host move, redesign or major plugin change

How we set up backups and restore

1

Map what needs saving

We list files, database, uploads and custom folders, and note how often each one changes.

2

Choose schedule and retention

We agree how often backups run and how long each is kept, with frequent database copies for shops.

3

Send copies off-site

Backups go to encrypted cloud storage outside your hosting account, with its own separate login.

4

Test a full restore

A backup is restored to a private staging copy, and pages, logins and orders are checked.

5

Document everything else

DNS records, email settings and hosting details are written down so the whole setup can be rebuilt.

6

Monitor the jobs

Backup runs are watched, failures are reported to you, and test restores repeat at agreed intervals.

What you end up with

  • Scheduled backups of files and database together
  • Off-site copies held outside your hosting account
  • Retention long enough to reach past slow-to-spot problems
  • Frequent database backups for WooCommerce orders
  • A tested restore with notes on how long it took
  • A written record of DNS, email and hosting settings

Choosing the right kind of restore

Restoring rarely means rolling the whole site back. The right method depends on what went wrong.

  • Bad plugin update: we restore just the affected files, leaving content and orders alone
  • Deleted page or product: we pull that one item from a backup instead of overwriting the database
  • Hacked site: we restore clean files, then check for backdoors, because a backup taken after the break-in may hold them too (see malware removal)
  • Lost hosting account: we rebuild on new hosting from the off-site copy and repoint DNS using the records we kept (see hosting and migration)
  • Shop rollback: orders placed since the backup are exported first and brought back afterwards

Frequently asked questions

Aren’t my host’s backups enough?

They are a useful extra copy, but they usually sit in the same place as your site. If the account is suspended, hacked or closed, you can lose access to both at once. An off-site copy under your control removes that single point of failure.

How often should my site be backed up?

That depends on how often content changes. A brochure site edited monthly may only need weekly copies. A shop taking orders through the day needs database backups several times daily. We set the schedule around real use.

Who owns the backups?

You do. Storage can sit in your own cloud account, or in ours with access shared with you. Either way you get the details to download any backup without going through us.

Is my email included?

Email normally lives with a separate provider, so it is not part of a website backup. We record your email and DNS settings so they can be recreated, and can advise on backing up mailboxes separately.

Can you restore a backup someone else made?

Usually, provided it contains both files and database. Send us what you have and we will test it on a staging copy before touching the live site, so you know what it holds first.
