Google Tag Manager Setup Manchester

Google Tag Manager setup moves every tracking and marketing script on your website into one container you can manage, test and roll back. We build and tidy containers for Manchester businesses whose tags are scattered across theme files, plugins and long-forgotten snippets.

One container instead of scripts everywhere

Most sites gather tracking code piecemeal: analytics in the theme header, an ad pixel pasted into a plugin, a chat widget in the footer, a heatmap tool tried once and forgotten. Nobody knows what fires where, and every change needs a developer to edit code.

Tag Manager replaces that with a single snippet. Inside the container, tags are the scripts themselves (GA4, Google Ads, Meta Pixel), triggers decide when they fire (all pages, a form submission, a button click), and variables hold the values they need (page path, order value, click text). The dataLayer is the bridge between site and container: your site pushes structured facts such as a completed booking or a basket total, and tags read them reliably instead of scraping the page.

Changes are tested in preview and debug mode before publishing. Workspaces keep separate pieces of work apart, and every published version is stored, so a bad change can be rolled back to the previous version quickly. Getting GA4 right starts here.

Who gets most out of a proper container

Tag Manager pays off most where several people or platforms touch tracking.

  • Marketing teams who want to adjust tags without a developer for every change.
  • Sites with hard-coded scripts that disappear whenever the theme is updated.
  • Agencies inheriting a container full of tags nobody can explain.
  • Any site that needs tags to respect cookie consent choices.

Building your Tag Manager container

1

Inventory every script

We list every tracking and marketing script the site loads, where it lives, and any duplicates.

2

Design the container

We set the naming convention, folders, triggers, variables and a written dataLayer specification for your developer or platform.

3

Move scripts across

Each tag is rebuilt in GTM and the hard-coded version removed, so nothing fires twice.

4

Set consent and permissions

Consent settings are applied per tag, and user permissions limit who can publish.

5

Preview, publish, record

Everything is checked in preview mode, then published as a named version with notes.

What we hand over

  • A container owned by your Google account, with us added as a user.
  • A tag inventory showing what each tag does and when it fires.
  • A dataLayer specification for forms, bookings or purchases.
  • Consent settings configured on every tag.
  • Named, annotated versions so any change can be reversed.

Naming, permissions and server-side tagging

A container stays usable only if things are named consistently. We use a pattern such as “GA4 – Event – Form Submit” or “Trigger – Click – WhatsApp Button”.

Permissions matter as much as naming. Container access can be set to read, edit, approve or publish, so a junior marketer can draft changes while only named people push them live.

Server-side tagging is an option for busier sites. A second container runs on a server you control and receives data first, giving you more say over what reaches third parties. It adds a server to run and maintain, so we only suggest it where the volume justifies it. Scripts that do not belong in GTM can go through our custom script installation service.

Frequently asked questions

Will moving to Tag Manager lose my existing tracking data?

No. Historical data stays in GA4, Google Ads and your other platforms. We switch each tag over carefully and check it in preview, so there is no gap in collection and no period where tags fire twice.

Does Tag Manager slow my site down?

The container itself is one script. What slows pages is the tags inside it, especially heavy third-party ones. Moving everything into one place makes it easier to spot and remove tags that no longer earn their place.

Who owns the Tag Manager account?

You do. We create the account under your business Google login, or take over an existing one, and add ourselves as users. If you change supplier later, you simply remove our access and keep everything.

What is the dataLayer and does my developer need to touch it?

It is a JavaScript object your site fills with facts such as an order value or a form name. Platforms like WooCommerce often have plugins for it; custom sites need a few lines of code, which we specify or add.

Do we need server-side tagging?

Most sites do not. A standard web container handles typical analytics and ad tags well. Server-side tagging is worth considering for busier shops that want more control over the data sent to ad platforms and can support an extra server.
