WordPress Speed Optimisation Manchester

WordPress speed optimisation is hands-on work on the plugins, caching, database, theme and server behind a slow WordPress site. Our Manchester team does it for business owners whose pages drag on phones and whose admin area feels heavy, and we show what changed with before and after timings.

Why WordPress sites get slower over time

A fresh WordPress install is quick. The slowdown builds up: a form plugin, a slider, a page builder loading its whole library on every page, a theme pulling in four font families. Each adds queries, CSS and JavaScript, and none of it leaves when the feature stops being used.

The database ages too. Revisions pile up, expired transients linger, and long-deleted plugins leave autoloaded options that WordPress reads on every request. Add an old PHP version and a crowded shared server, and the browser waits for the first byte, which shows up as a high server response time (TTFB).

This is speed work, not SEO. We make the site respond and render faster for the people using it; search work is a separate job under technical SEO. For a fixed scope, you can order our website speed optimisation package directly.

Sites that feel the drag most

Some WordPress sites suffer more than others.

  • WooCommerce shops, where cart and checkout cannot be fully cached and every query counts.
  • Elementor, Divi or WPBakery sites that send large CSS and JavaScript bundles to every page.
  • Older business sites that have gathered plugins and revisions for years.
  • Membership and booking sites, where logged-in users skip the page cache entirely.

How we speed up a WordPress site

1

Baseline and staging copy

We time key pages, record server response time, take a full backup and work on a staging copy so the live site keeps trading.

2

Plugin audit

We check what each plugin loads and where, remove the unused, replace the heavy and stop the rest loading scripts where they are not needed.

3

Caching layers

Page and browser caching are configured, plus a persistent object cache such as Redis where your host supports it.

4

Database clean-up

We trim revisions, clear expired transients, check autoloaded options and optimise tables, backing up before each step.

5

Front-end loading

Render-blocking CSS and JavaScript are deferred or split, fonts are self-hosted, and page builder assets are reduced where possible.

6

Server and handover

We move the site to a supported PHP version, check hosting limits, go live and re-time the same pages.

What is included

  • A before and after timing sheet for the same pages under the same conditions.
  • A written plugin audit showing what was kept, replaced or removed, and why.
  • Page, browser and object caching, with cart, checkout and account pages excluded.
  • A cleaned database with a revision limit set in wp-config.php.
  • A PHP version update with a compatibility check on theme and plugins.

The usual culprits we find

Most slow WordPress sites share a handful of problems: a bloated autoloaded options total, two or three caching plugins working against each other, sliders loading on every page when they only appear on the home page, and Google Fonts called externally in weights nobody uses.

On the server side we often see unsupported PHP versions, no object cache, and hosting plans that throttle CPU at busy times. When the host is the bottleneck we say so plainly and can carry out a hosting migration instead of stacking more plugins on top. Oversized images are another regular find, covered by our image optimisation service.

Frequently asked questions

Will speeding up my WordPress site break anything?

We work on a staging copy and back up before each change, checking forms, checkout, menus and logins before anything goes live. If a plugin conflict appears, we roll that change back and try another approach.

Do I need to change my theme or page builder?

Usually not. Most gains come with plugins, caching, the database and the server. A lighter theme is only worth discussing when the builder itself is the main cause of the delay.

Which caching plugin do you use?

It depends on your server. On LiteSpeed hosting, LiteSpeed Cache makes sense because it works with the server directly. Elsewhere we pick a well-supported page cache. One caching tool set up properly beats several overlapping ones.

Is WordPress speed optimisation the same as SEO?

No. Speed work makes pages load and respond faster for visitors. It does not touch your content, keywords or links, and we do not sell it as a ranking service. Search work is quoted separately.

Can you make WooCommerce checkout faster?

Checkout is personal to each shopper, so it cannot be page-cached. We cut database queries, add object caching, strip scripts that do not belong on checkout and make payment plugins load only where needed.
