PageSpeed and GTmetrix Optimisation Manchester
We read your PageSpeed Insights and GTmetrix reports, explain what each number means, and fix the items that genuinely slow your pages down. It suits Manchester businesses who have been sent a red score by a developer, a marketer or a sales email and want to know what matters.

What these reports really measure
PageSpeed Insights shows two different things on one screen. The top section, where your site has enough traffic, is field data out of the Chrome UX Report: how real Chrome users experienced the page. Below it sits a Lighthouse lab test, one simulated load that produces the 0 to 100 performance score.
Mobile scores are usually lower because Lighthouse simulates a mid-range phone on a throttled connection. A page scoring in the nineties on desktop can land far lower on mobile without anything being broken. GTmetrix gives its own letter grade plus a waterfall chart of every file the page requests, in order. Test location matters too: a run on another continent adds network delay your customers never feel.
Chasing 100 is not the goal. We aim for real loading speed for visitors and treat the score as a guide. If you need the field metrics themselves fixed, see Core Web Vitals optimisation.
Who asks us to look at their scores
Most requests start with a screenshot and a worried question.
- Owners who received an automated email quoting a low score and want an honest reading.
- Marketing teams who need before and after reports for a board or client.
- Sites where the mobile score trails desktop by a wide margin.
- Owners of landing pages for paid ads, where a slow first view wastes clicks.
How we work through a report
Fix the test settings
We agree the URLs, device, GTmetrix location and connection, run each test several times and use the median.
Read every line
We go through the Lighthouse opportunities and diagnostics and the GTmetrix waterfall.
Rank by real impact
Items that delay what visitors see or can tap come first; cosmetic warnings go to the bottom.
Make the changes
We apply the fixes on staging, then move them live once checked.
Re-test identically
Same URLs, same device, same location, same connection, so the before and after reports compare like with like.
What you get back
- Your original reports, annotated in plain English.
- A ranked list of issues with the cause of each on your site.
- A record of every change made.
- After reports run with identical test settings.
- A note on remaining warnings we chose not to fix, and why.
Reading a GTmetrix waterfall
Each waterfall row is one request. A long wait on the very first row means the server is slow to respond, which no front-end tweak will cure; our WordPress speed work covers that end. A staircase of CSS, font and script files before anything paints means a render-blocking chain. A large image arriving late is usually the main hero, and the fix is to request it earlier and make it smaller.
Look also for third-party domains. Chat tools, video embeds and ad pixels each open new connections, often clustered halfway down the chart. Redirect chains show up as short rows that hand off to another URL before the real page starts.
Some Lighthouse warnings we often leave alone. “Reduce unused JavaScript” frequently points at Google’s own tag, and “efficient cache policy” warnings on third-party files are outside your control. Fixing those rarely changes what a visitor experiences.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my mobile score so much lower than desktop?
Lighthouse tests mobile as a mid-range phone on a throttled connection, so heavy scripts and large images take far longer. A gap between the two is normal. We work on the mobile result because that is how most visitors arrive.
Why does my score change every time I run the test?
Server load, network conditions and third-party scripts vary between runs, and the score blends several timings. That is why we run each test several times with fixed settings and compare medians rather than single results.
Is a score of 100 worth chasing?
Rarely. The last few points often mean stripping out analytics, chat or video that the business relies on. A page that loads quickly for real visitors matters more than a perfect lab number.
Which GTmetrix test location should we use?
The one closest to your customers that your account offers, ideally in the UK, and the same one every time. Changing location between tests makes the before and after figures impossible to compare.
Does a low score mean my site is slow for customers?
Not necessarily. The lab test is deliberately harsh. Check the field data at the top of PageSpeed Insights first: if real visits are fast, the low score is telling you about worst-case conditions rather than everyday ones.
