Tutor App Development Manchester

We build lesson apps for tutors, music teachers, driving instructors and tuition centres in Manchester. Parents and students book lessons, buy packages, collect homework and read progress notes, with child accounts and app store payment rules handled properly at the outset.

Running lessons, not chasing messages

Many tutors run on WhatsApp threads, bank transfers and a paper diary, which works until there are thirty students and a parent asks what homework was set three weeks ago.

A tutor app puts lessons, payments and resources in one place. Families book a single slot or a block, worksheets sit beside each lesson, and the tutor writes short progress notes parents can read. Live lessons can run over video inside the app or through a linked video service.

Payment rules matter. Apple’s App Store Review Guideline 3.1.3(d) covers person-to-person services: when a lesson is a real-time service between two individuals, such as one tutor and one student, the app may take payment by methods other than in-app purchase. Group sessions and recorded courses fall under different rules, which our e-learning apps page explains.

Teachers and centres it suits

Anyone teaching on a regular timetable.

  • Private tutors covering GCSE and A level subjects who keep parents informed.
  • Music teachers running weekly slots and exam preparation.
  • Driving instructors booking by pickup point and selling blocks of hours.
  • Tuition centres in Manchester with several tutors, rooms and term dates.
  • Swimming and sports coaches booking children into regular sessions.

Our process for tutor apps

1

Map your teaching week

We note how lessons are booked, paid for, moved and cancelled today, including term breaks and holiday cover.

2

Plan child accounts

We decide who has an account, what a child can see and do, and what the parent controls, before any screens are drawn.

3

Design for three users

Parents, students and tutors each get screens built around their own tasks.

4

Build and connect payments

We build bookings, packages, resources and notes, then connect card payments in line with each store’s rules.

5

Pilot with a few families

A handful of families use it for a few weeks, then we fix what confused them and release to both stores.

What the app comes with

  • Lesson booking with weekly repeats and term breaks.
  • Packages and lesson blocks with balances parents can see.
  • Homework and resources attached to each lesson.
  • Progress notes written by the tutor for parents.
  • Video lessons for one-to-one sessions.
  • Separate parent, student and tutor permissions.
  • Tutor dashboard for diary, payments and records.

Child accounts and safeguarding by design

When under-18s are likely to use an app, the ICO’s Children’s code (the Age Appropriate Design Code) shapes how their data is handled. We set privacy settings high by default, keep location and profiling off for child users, collect the minimum and explain things in words a young person can follow. We work to the ICO’s published guidance; take legal advice for your situation.

Safeguarding sits in the messaging. For younger students, every message between tutor and child is visible to the parent’s account, and there is no private channel the parent cannot see. The app can also warn when a phone number or email address is typed into chat.

DBS checks remain the tutor’s or centre’s responsibility; the app can record that a certificate has been seen, but it does not carry out checks. Running a whole school? Our school apps page fits better.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to use Apple’s in-app purchase for lesson payments?

Not for live one-to-one lessons. Guideline 3.1.3(d) lets real-time person-to-person services, such as tutoring, take payment by other methods. Live group sessions and pre-recorded courses are treated differently, so we check each product you sell against the current rules before building checkout.

Can parents read messages between the tutor and their child?

Yes, and for younger students we make that the default. Messages sit in a thread the parent can always open, and tutors cannot start a hidden conversation. For adult learners, messaging works normally between tutor and student.

Does the app carry out DBS checks on tutors?

No. DBS checks remain the responsibility of the tutor or the centre employing them. A tuition centre can store the date a certificate was seen and set a renewal reminder, but the app does not apply for or verify checks.

Can I sell blocks of lessons and track what is left?

Yes. You set up packages, such as ten lessons, and each booking draws one down. Parents see the balance, and you choose whether unused lessons expire, roll over or need topping up.

Will it work for a driving school with several instructors?

Yes. Each instructor has their own diary, area and pickup points, and learners book with their instructor or whoever covers that area. The school dashboard shows every instructor’s week and payments outstanding.
