E-learning App Development Manchester
We design and build e-learning apps for Manchester businesses training their staff and for course creators selling lessons to the public. Learners watch video, take quizzes and earn a certificate on a phone, with results sent to your learning management system if you run one.

Turning a course into an app learners finish
A folder of videos and PDFs tends to lose people after module one. An app gives each learner a clear next step, remembers where they stopped and lets them download lessons for a train with no signal. Quizzes show what has stuck, and a certificate gives a reason to finish.
Two kinds of project sit here. Staff training apps serve known employees signing in with work accounts, and the business wants completion reports. Public course apps sell to strangers, so they need sign-up and payment, and digital content sold inside an iOS app generally has to use Apple’s in-app purchase. We plan that route early, and a progressive web app can share the same lessons on the web.
If your organisation already uses an LMS, the app can report activity back to it through SCORM packages or the xAPI standard, so managers keep one set of training records instead of two.
Who commissions e-learning apps
Learning clients usually fall into one of these groups.
- Employers with shift workers who never sit at a desk but still need mandatory training.
- Franchise and multi-site businesses keeping every branch on the same procedures.
- Professional trainers and coaches selling a structured course to the public.
- Training providers delivering accredited programmes that need assessment records.
- Membership bodies offering continuing development content to their members, often alongside a membership app.
Our build process for learning apps
Audit your content
We review your videos, slides and documents and agree how each module breaks into short lessons.
Decide the sales model
For public courses we settle in-app purchase, subscriptions or web sign-up; for staff apps we agree how employees log in.
Design the learner screens
We lay out the course map, lesson player, quiz flow and certificate so a first-time user knows what to do next.
Build, encode and connect
We build the app and admin area, prepare video for streaming and download, and wire up SCORM or xAPI where needed.
Test with real learners
A pilot group works through a full module while we watch where they stall, then we adjust wording and layout.
Included in an e-learning build
- iOS and Android apps with a lesson player that supports offline downloads.
- Quizzes with pass marks, retries and feedback on wrong answers.
- Progress tracking per learner and per cohort.
- Certificates of completion generated as PDFs with the learner’s name and date.
- An admin area to upload lessons, set up cohorts and export completion reports.
- Captions and transcripts for every video lesson.
- SCORM or xAPI reporting to your existing LMS where required.
Making lessons accessible to every learner
Captions help people on a noisy bus and people who are deaf or hard of hearing. Transcripts let learners search a lesson for one step and suit screen reader users. The app respects the phone’s text size setting, keeps contrast readable and makes every quiz answer easy to tap.
Cohort features suit some courses: a shared start date, a discussion thread per module and a tutor who sees who has fallen behind. Staff courses often use a manager dashboard instead. Our content marketing team can turn lesson topics into articles that lead people to the app.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to use Apple in-app purchase for my courses?
If you sell digital lessons inside an iOS app, Apple’s rules generally require in-app purchase. Staff training apps that charge nothing to learners avoid the issue. We explain the options for your model during planning so pricing decisions are made with the full picture.
Can learners download videos to watch offline?
Yes. Lessons can be saved to the device, played without a connection, and progress syncs once the phone is back online. Downloads stay inside the app, so files cannot be copied out casually.
What is the difference between SCORM and xAPI?
Both are standards for sending learning records to an LMS. SCORM is older and widely supported, focused on course completion and scores. xAPI records a broader range of activity, including learning done outside a browser. We use whichever your LMS accepts.
Can we reuse our existing training videos?
Usually. We re-encode them for mobile streaming, split long recordings into shorter lessons where it helps, and add captions. If audio quality is poor we will tell you before building around it.
How do managers see who has completed training?
The admin area shows completion by person, team or site, with dates and quiz scores. Reports export as spreadsheets, and overdue learners can receive a reminder notification without anyone chasing them by email.
