GA4 works differently to the old Analytics
Universal Analytics stopped processing data on 1 July 2023. If your site still carries an old UA tracking code, it has sent data nowhere since then. GA4 replaced it and is event-based: every page view, scroll, click and purchase is an event with parameters, rather than a session made of different hit types.
Enhanced measurement records page views, scrolls, outbound clicks, site search, video engagement and file downloads automatically. That is a start, not a setup. The actions that matter to your business, such as an enquiry or a booking, need marking as key events, the name Google gave GA4 conversions in 2024.
Some defaults catch people out. Data retention for explorations is two months unless changed, and standard properties can be set to 14 months. Staff visits count as traffic until an internal traffic filter is active. If checkout or booking happens on another domain, sessions split without cross-domain measurement. Ad platform tracking is handled under conversion tracking.
Who we set GA4 up for
Most of our GA4 work falls into a few groups.
- Businesses whose property was auto-created and never configured.
- Online shops that need ecommerce events with order values.
- Service firms that want enquiries counted, not just page views.
- Advertisers who need GA4 linked to Google Ads for audiences and key events.
- Organisations whose booking or payment step sits on a separate domain.
Our GA4 setup steps
Audit what exists
We check for old UA code, duplicate tags, existing properties and who has access.
Agree a measurement plan
Together we list the events, key events and parameters worth recording, so reports answer real questions.
Configure the property
Data stream, enhanced measurement, 14-month retention, internal traffic filter, cross-domain domains and unwanted referrals such as payment gateways.
Connect consent and products
Consent mode is tied to your cookie banner, and the property is linked to Search Console and Google Ads.
Test in DebugView
Each event and key event is triggered and checked in DebugView before we sign off.
What you end up with
- A GA4 property owned by your business account.
- A written measurement plan listing every event and key event.
- Retention set to 14 months and internal traffic filtered.
- Cross-domain measurement where needed.
- Search Console and Google Ads links in place.
- Consent mode working with your banner.
Ecommerce events and the settings people miss
For shops, GA4 expects a set of recommended ecommerce events: view_item_list, view_item, add_to_cart, begin_checkout, add_payment_info and purchase. The purchase event needs a transaction_id, value and currency. The transaction ID matters because GA4 uses it to ignore repeat purchases when a customer refreshes the thank-you page. On WooCommerce and Shopify we push these values through the dataLayer rather than scraping the page.
Other settings get missed constantly: unwanted referrals for PayPal or card gateways, so sales are not credited to the payment provider; the Search Console link, without which query data never reaches GA4; and consent mode, which tells Google tags how to behave when a visitor declines cookies. We set each one and note it in the handover.
Frequently asked questions
I still have Universal Analytics on my site. Is it collecting anything?
No. Universal Analytics stopped processing data on 1 July 2023, so the old code does nothing useful and only adds weight to the page. We remove it and replace it with a properly configured GA4 property.
Why doesn’t GA4 match my actual sales figures?
Visitors who decline cookies, ad blockers, duplicate tags and refunds all create gaps. Some difference is normal. We remove the avoidable causes, such as double-firing tags and missing transaction IDs, so the remaining gap is explainable.
Should GA4 be installed through Tag Manager?
Usually, yes. It keeps GA4 alongside your other tags, makes events easier to add later and gives version history. Our Tag Manager setup service covers building and organising the container itself.
How long does GA4 keep my data?
The retention setting controls how long user-level data is available for explorations. It defaults to two months, and standard properties can extend it to 14 months. Standard aggregated reports are not affected, but we set the longer option as routine.
Can you build dashboards on top of GA4?
Yes. Once the data is clean, our analytics reporting service turns it into regular reports focused on enquiries, sales and the pages that lead to them, written for owners rather than analysts.
