Why page speed matters to traders in Ashton-under-Lyne

A lot of local browsing happens on mobile data rather than office broadband. Someone on the tram out to the terminus, or sitting in a car park at Ashton Moss, will not wait for a slider of uncompressed photos to load before they see your opening hours or stock. They tap back.

Trade and manufacturing sites around the M60 have their own weight problems: product catalogues with hundreds of images, downloadable PDF data sheets and WooCommerce carts that cannot be fully cached. Google measures real visitor experience through Core Web Vitals, with published thresholds of 2.5 seconds for Largest Contentful Paint, 200 milliseconds for Interaction to Next Paint and 0.1 for Cumulative Layout Shift. Our WordPress speed optimisation in Manchester works to the same checks.

Fixing your site without disrupting the business

Speed work is almost entirely done at a distance. You give us a WordPress administrator account and hosting or SFTP access, ideally as a temporary login you delete afterwards. We copy the site to staging, so customers keep using the live version while we test. Results are shown on a screen-share. If you prefer to talk in person, come to our Cheetham Hill office, or we can call in by arrangement. Expect about 25 to 30 minutes each way from Ashton along the A62, traffic allowing.

The order we work in

1

Measure where things stand

We record PageSpeed Insights, WebPageTest and server response times for your key pages, and note what Query Monitor shows in the admin.

2

Staging copy and backup

A full backup is taken and the site is cloned to a private staging address, so nothing is tested on paying customers.

3

Plugin and script audit

Every plugin is looked at for the files it adds and where. Unused ones go, heavy ones are swapped, and the rest are switched off on pages that never use them.

4

Caching and database

We set up a page cache and browser cache headers, plus Redis object caching if the host offers it. We clear old revisions, expired transients and bloated autoloaded options.

5

Images, fonts and scripts

Images are converted to WebP and sized properly, the main image is preloaded, fonts are served locally and render-blocking JavaScript is deferred.

6

Go live and re-measure

Changes move to the live site, cart and checkout pages are tested, and the same pages are timed again under the same conditions.

What you receive at the end

  • Timings for your key pages, recorded at the outset and again at the end
  • A plugin list showing what was kept, swapped or removed, and why
  • A cache setup that leaves the basket, checkout and customer account alone
  • A leaner database, with WP_POST_REVISIONS capped in wp-config.php
  • A supported PHP version, checked against your theme and plugins
  • Plain notes on what to avoid so the site stays quick

Slowdowns we often find on Tameside business sites

Several of these usually stack up on the same site.

  • A homepage slider carrying full-size camera photos, loaded before anything else.
  • Elementor or Divi assets pulled into every page, even plain text ones.
  • Booking, chat and tracking scripts running sitewide when one page uses them.
  • An outdated PHP version on crowded shared hosting, giving a slow first byte.
  • WooCommerce cart fragments firing on every page view.

Heavy images are often the quickest fix, which is why website image optimisation is a common first step. When the server is the bottleneck, a planned hosting migration may help more than any plugin change.

Frequently asked questions

Our customers mostly find us on their phones around town. Do you test on mobile data?

Yes. Lab tools simulate a mid-range phone on a slower connection, and Search Console shows field data where Google has enough visits. For a busy local site, the mobile figures matter far more than how quickly it opens on office broadband.

Could you go through the results with us at our unit near junction 23?

Yes, by arrangement. Seeing the before and after timings side by side with whoever manages the site is useful, especially if staff add products or posts. A video call works just as well, or you can visit us in M8.

Will a caching plugin on its own fix a slow site?

Rarely. Caching helps pages that are the same for every visitor, but it does nothing for a slow server, oversized images or a cart page that must stay dynamic. We treat caching as one layer among several.

Will the work break our page builder layouts?

It should not, because everything is tested on staging first. We compare pages visually before and after, and if deferring a script breaks a menu or form, we exclude it. Nothing reaches the live site until you have seen it working.
