Mobile App Development Salford

Mobile app development for Salford start-ups, media firms and local businesses that need more than a website. We plan, design and build apps for iPhone and Android, publish them on the App Store and Google Play, and keep them working after launch.

Why Salford firms commission apps

Start-ups and spin-outs from the University of Salford often need a first version that tests an idea with users or investors, built quickly but on a codebase that can grow. Studios and digital businesses around MediaCityUK sometimes need an app for an audience, a production crew or a client brief.

Closer to the high street, a gym, salon or venue on Chapel Street might want bookings, loyalty or members’ content on a customer’s phone, and a trades firm may need an app that lets engineers log jobs, photos and signatures on site. The first job is working out whether an app is right at all, or whether a fast mobile website would do.

The way we plan and build is set out on our mobile app development Manchester page.

How we run an app project with you

App projects run over months, so most contact is remote: weekly video calls, a shared board in Trello or Jira showing what is in progress, and test builds on your own phone through TestFlight for iPhone and Google Play internal testing for Android.

Workshops at the start, when we are defining users and features, often work better face to face. Our Cheetham Hill office is roughly 10 to 20 minutes from most Salford addresses by road, traffic depending. Come to us, or we can visit your office or studio by arrangement.

Six stages of an app build

1

Discovery workshop

We agree who the app is for, the problem it solves and the fewest features worth launching.

2

Design and prototype

Screens are designed in Figma and linked into a clickable prototype you can try on a phone.

3

Choose the build approach

We recommend native, cross-platform React Native or a progressive web app, and set out the trade-offs in writing.

4

Build in sprints

Features arrive in two-week batches, each one installed on your test devices for you to try.

5

Store submission

We prepare listings, screenshots, privacy details and the data safety form, then handle the App Store and Google Play submission.

6

Support and updates

After launch we fix bugs, keep up with operating system updates and plan the next features from real usage.

Delivered at the end of the build

  • Figma designs and a clickable prototype
  • Source code in a Git repository you own
  • Published apps on the App Store and Google Play, under your own developer accounts
  • A back end and admin panel where the app needs one
  • Crash reporting and analytics set up, for example with Firebase Crashlytics
  • Written notes on hosting, accounts and how to release updates

Questions we ask before quoting an app

These points show what kind of app you need, if any, and how big the job is.

  • Who opens it, and how often? An app used daily by staff justifies more work than one a customer opens twice a year.
  • Does it need to work without signal? Engineers in basements and on new-build sites often lose connection, so offline saving changes the build.
  • Does it take payments or bookings? That affects store rules, payment providers and the back end.
  • Will users log in? Accounts bring password resets, data protection duties and the account deletion option both app stores expect.
  • Who updates the content after launch? Someone needs an admin panel to change menus, timetables or news.

For field staff, our field service app work covers job sheets and signatures. For founders testing an idea, an MVP app keeps the first release lean.

Frequently asked questions

We are a University of Salford spin-out with an idea but no designs. Where do we begin?

Start with a discovery workshop. We turn the idea into user groups, core tasks and a feature list, then a clickable prototype you can show to potential users or investors before full development. That order catches costly mistakes early, while changes are still quick to make.

Can we hold the kick-off at our studio at the Quays rather than your office?

Yes. We visit by arrangement, and the kick-off workshop is often the best moment to do it, with everyone who has a stake in the app in one room. The rest of the project then runs on calls, the shared board and test builds on your phones.

Should we build native apps or one cross-platform app?

For most business apps, one React Native codebase covering iPhone and Android is the sensible choice and keeps maintenance simpler. Native Swift or Kotlin makes sense for heavy use of the camera, Bluetooth or graphics. We explain the reasoning for your case in writing before you commit.

How long do Apple and Google take to approve an app?

Approval times vary and neither store commits to a fixed timescale. Many rejections come from missing privacy details, a login the store testers cannot get past or unclear payment flows, so we check those before submitting and supply a test account with clear notes.
