Quick answers

How many pages can a saddle stitched booklet have?

The Pagecount dropdown runs from 8 to 48 pages in steps of four: 8, 12, 16, 20 and so on. Stapling through the fold means each extra sheet adds four pages. For longer documents, perfect bound booklets run from 40 to 88 pages and wiro bound booklets from 60 to 104.

What sizes are available?

Eight: A4 Portrait, A4 Landscape, A5 Portrait, A5 Landscape, A6 Portrait, DL Portrait, 210mm Square and 148mm Square. A5 Portrait is a familiar size for programmes and price lists, while A4 gives reports and catalogues more room. For a size that is not listed, ask for a quote.

How much do saddle stitched booklets cost?

25 booklets start at £94.37, 100 at £110.30 and 1,000 at £247.58 on the cheapest combination of size, paper, cover and page count. The configurator updates the live price as you change each option, so you can compare papers before ordering. Larger projects are covered on our brochure printing page.

Can the cover be a different paper from the inside pages?

Yes. Cover Material is its own dropdown with 22 stocks, from 90gsm Premium Smooth White Paper up to 350gsm Art Board Silk Finish, including Twill 300gsm and Tintoretto Gesso 240gsm. A heavier cover than the inside pages gives the booklet a firmer feel. Every booklet type is listed under booklets and brochures.

Which lamination options are there?

Seven: None, or matt, gloss or soft touch, each on one side or on both sides. Matt cuts down shine, gloss makes colours look brighter and soft touch gives a smooth, tactile surface. Pick None to keep the natural feel of the stock. For a booklet that is board throughout, see heavyweight saddle stitched booklets.

How long do saddle stitched booklets take?

Typical turnaround is around 3 working days for most combinations. Very large runs and some specialist cover stocks take longer, so the options you pick can change the time. Collect from our Manchester studio or choose UK delivery at checkout; the same applies across the areas we cover.

What artwork do I need to supply?

A print-ready PDF at the finished size you selected, with the pages as single pages in reading order and a total that matches the page count you choose. If you would like us to lay it out, choose the Professional artwork and design service instead. Questions about a file? Contact us.

Asked by buyers 22

Why do the page counts go up in fours?

Each sheet is printed on both sides, folded in half and nested inside the others, so one sheet always makes four pages. That is why 8, 12, 16 and every other value in the Pagecount dropdown divides by four. For four or six panels without staples, a folded leaflet does the same job.

Will the booklet open out properly?

Yes. The pages turn on the staples rather than on a glued spine, so every spread opens out for reading, and the centre spread opens fully. For a document that has to stay completely flat on its own, such as a manual on a workbench, wiro binding is the better choice.

When should I choose perfect binding instead?

Choose perfect binding when the document is long or needs a square spine; perfect bound booklets on our site run from 40 to 88 pages. Saddle stitching stays the lighter, simpler choice for anything up to 48 pages. Compare the two on the perfect bound booklets page.

Can I have a hard cover?

Not with saddle stitching, which uses a paper or board cover stapled with the pages. For a book with a rigid cover, look at our hardback books, which suit yearbooks, portfolios and keepsakes that need to last on a shelf.

Which paper is best for the inside pages?

For colour-heavy pages such as catalogues and photo programmes, a gloss or silk art paper between 115gsm and 170gsm keeps images crisp. For text-led documents, 90gsm Premium Smooth White Paper or 120gsm Uncoated read well and are easy to write on. All 11 papers sit in the Paper Type dropdown; see the booklet range for other bindings.

What is the difference between gloss and silk paper?

Both are coated art papers. Gloss has a shinier surface that makes colours look bolder, while silk has a smoother, low-sheen finish that is easier to read under bright lights. Here each comes in 115gsm, 130gsm, 150gsm and 170gsm, so you can pick the weight and the finish separately.

What are Twill, Tintoretto Gesso, Pearl Icewhite and Woodstock Bettula?

They are specialist cover stocks in the Cover Material dropdown: Twill 300gsm, Tintoretto Gesso 240gsm, Pearl Icewhite 300gsm and Woodstock Bettula 285gsm. They give a booklet a cover that stands apart from standard art board. To talk through which one suits your project, ask us.

Should I laminate the cover?

Lamination is worth it when the booklet will be handled a lot, carried around or kept for months, such as a season programme or a product catalogue. Choose None if you want the natural paper feel or expect people to write on the cover. Our brochure printing page covers other finishing ideas.

Can the cover be the same weight as the pages?

Yes. The Cover Material list includes lighter stocks, down to 90gsm Premium Smooth White Paper, so the cover can match the inside pages. That keeps the weight and the price down, which helps with newsletters, mailings and handouts printed in large numbers.

Which size suits a programme or order of service?

A5 Portrait is the size most people expect in the hand for programmes, orders of service and gig guides, and 148mm Square gives a more distinctive shape. A4 Portrait leaves room for larger photos and tables. For tickets to go with the programme, see event ticket printing.

What is a DL booklet?

DL Portrait is a tall, narrow format, a third of A4, which slips into a standard DL envelope. It works well for price lists, pocket guides and drinks lists. For menus printed as single cards or folded sheets instead, see our menu printing page.

Can I order a custom size?

Not through this page, because the Custom Size option is not offered on this product. Send the size you have in mind, with the page count and quantity, through Get a Quote and we will come back to you with what is possible.

Is spot UV available on the cover?

No. Spot UV is not offered on these booklets, so the cover finish choices are the laminations in the dropdown. If you want a raised gloss highlight on printed cards to hand out with the booklet, see our luxury business cards.

What is the smallest quantity?

The Quantity dropdown starts at 25 copies and goes up to 10,000, with steps at 50, 100, 200, 250, 500, 750 and 1,000 and larger runs beyond that. The price updates as soon as you pick a quantity. Other printed items can be priced the same way in our online shop.

How much does a large run cost?

On the cheapest combination, 10,000 booklets start at £1,501.18, against £94.37 for 25. The price per copy falls sharply as the quantity grows, so it can pay to order a full season's worth in one go. The configurator always shows the exact total for your choice.

Is anything added at checkout?

The configurator shows the print price. The Professional artwork and design service adds +£324.00 for booklets if you choose it. UK delivery is shown at checkout before you pay, and collection from our studio is also available. More about us is on the about page.

How should I set up my booklet file?

Send one PDF with every page as a single page in reading order, cover first, at the finished size you selected. Keep text and logos clear of the trimmed edges and of the centre fold, where the staples sit. If anything about the setup is unclear, get in touch before you order.

Can you lay out the booklet for me?

Yes. Choose the Professional artwork and design service in the Artwork dropdown and send us your text, photos and logo. It suits programmes and catalogues where the content exists but nobody has the time to set it out. You can read about our wider design work on the about page.

What if my content does not fill a multiple of four pages?

Add a page such as notes, contacts or an advert, or trim the content, so the total matches a value in the Pagecount dropdown. Blank pages are fine too if you include them in the file. Loose material can travel with the booklet as a brochure insert instead.

How do I order saddle stitched booklets?

Work through the dropdowns for Size, Paper Type, Lamination, Cover Material, Pagecount and Quantity, then choose an Artwork option. Any combination that is not available is adjusted automatically, and the price updates as you go. Pay by card at checkout, including Apple Pay and Google Pay. Other bindings sit in booklets and brochures.

Can I order booklets with folders or leaflets?

Yes. Add everything to the same basket and pay once at checkout; each item keeps its own options and artwork. For a sales or welcome pack, pair the booklet with our presentation folders, or add a flyer for the details that change often.

Can I collect booklets in Manchester?

Yes, from our studio at Unit 3, 116 Bury New Road, Manchester M8 8EB, or choose UK delivery at checkout, where the cost is shown before you pay. Boxes of a large run can be heavy, so bring a suitable vehicle. Customers across the areas we cover use both options.
