Quick answers

What sizes do your hardback books come in?

Five formats are listed: A5 Portrait, A5 Landscape, A4 Portrait, A4 Landscape and 210mm Square. Portrait suits novels, theses and reports, while the landscape and square shapes work well for photo books and portfolios. For a trim size outside those five, send the measurements through Get a Quote and the team will price it.

How much does it cost to print hardback books?

The lowest price is £282.96 for 25 books on the cheapest mix of size, paper, page count and lamination. Larger runs bring the cost per copy down: 100 books start at £816.24 and 500 at £2,834.90. The configurator recalculates the total as you change each dropdown. Compare other binding styles in the booklets and brochures range.

How many pages can a hardback book have?

The Inner Pages dropdown runs from 40 up to 192, rising in steps of 4, so 40, 44, 48 and so on. Choose the figure that matches your finished file. If your document is much shorter than 40 pages, a stapled format such as Heavyweight Saddle Stitched Booklets may suit it better.

How long does a hardback book order take?

Production typically takes around 6 working days once your order and artwork are in. Treat that as a guide, not a fixed date, and allow extra time for delivery if you are not collecting. For a launch, graduation or presentation date, speak to the team before ordering so the timing can be talked through.

Which paper is used for the inside pages?

The standard paper is 90gsm Premium Smooth White Paper, a good fit for text-led books. For photographs and colour-heavy layouts, the Paper Type dropdown adds Art Paper in 130gsm, 150gsm, 170gsm and 200gsm, each in Gloss Finish or Silk Finish. Our brochure printing Manchester page has more on choosing stock for printed publications.

What cover and lamination choices are there?

The Cover Material dropdown offers 170gsm Art Paper Silk Finish or 200gsm Art Paper Silk Finish. Lamination comes as One Side (Matt) or One Side (Gloss). Matt gives a softer, understated look, while gloss makes colours and photographs stand out more. If you are weighing up a softback instead, the Perfect Bound Booklets page has more cover stocks.

Can I collect hardback books in Manchester?

Yes. Collection is available from our studio at Unit 3, 116 Bury New Road, Manchester M8 8EB. If you would rather have the books sent, UK delivery is available and its cost appears at checkout before you pay. Towns and districts we regularly work with are listed on the areas we cover page.

Asked by buyers 22

Should I choose gloss or silk art paper for the pages?

Gloss Finish has a shinier surface that makes photographs look vivid. Silk Finish has a lower sheen, which many people prefer for pages that combine text and images. Both are offered in 130gsm, 150gsm, 170gsm and 200gsm. A photo-led portfolio often goes gloss, while a company history with long chapters and some pictures sits comfortably on silk.

Is 200gsm paper too heavy for a hardback?

Not necessarily, but it adds bulk. Heavier pages give a more substantial feel and suit image-heavy books, while lighter stocks keep a long book easier to handle. If you are planning near the top of the 192-page range on a heavy paper, ask how the two will combine before you order, using the contact page.

What kind of book suits 90gsm Premium Smooth White Paper?

It is the standard paper on this page and works well for books built mostly from text, such as memoirs, theses, company histories and reports. It is the lightest of the nine paper choices, which helps on long books. If your book is mostly photographs, compare it with the 150gsm or 170gsm art papers in the booklets and brochures range before choosing.

Is there a soft touch lamination option on hardbacks?

Not on this product. The Lamination dropdown lists One Side (Matt) and One Side (Gloss) only. If a soft touch feel matters to the look of your publication, Perfect Bound Booklets include One Side (Soft Touch) lamination, though they are softback rather than hard cover. Matt lamination is the nearest match on a hardback.

Which size works best for a photo book?

Landscape and square formats tend to suit photography, since many pictures are wider than they are tall. A4 Landscape gives the most room for wide shots, A5 Landscape is more compact for a gift book, and 210mm Square handles a mix of portrait and landscape images well. Browse Heavyweight Art Prints if you also want single images for framing.

Can the cover and the inside pages use different papers?

Yes. Cover Material and Paper Type are separate dropdowns. The cover is printed on 170gsm or 200gsm Art Paper Silk Finish, while the inner pages can be any of the nine paper choices, from 90gsm Premium Smooth White Paper up to 200gsm Art Paper Gloss Finish. The price refreshes each time you change either setting.

Is A5 Portrait a sensible size for a memoir or novel?

Of the five sizes, A5 Portrait is the closest to a familiar paperback shape, so it suits memoirs, short fiction, poetry collections and family histories. It is comfortable to hold for long reading sessions too. If you also want a few promotional pieces for the launch, Personalised Bookmarks can carry the cover design.

What is the smallest number of hardback books I can order?

The Quantity dropdown starts at 25 copies, then goes to 50, 100, 200, 250, 500, 750 and 1000. If you need fewer than 25, for example a couple of thesis copies or a handful of family books, explain what you need on the quote form and the team will look at it for you.

What do 250 hardback books cost?

On the cheapest combination of options, 250 books come to £1,771.70 and 1000 come to £5,558.66. Your actual total depends on the size, paper, cover material, lamination and page count you select, so treat these as starting figures and check the live price in the configurator before adding anything to your cart.

Does adding inner pages push the price up?

Yes. Inner Pages is one of the settings that feed the live price, so moving from 40 pages towards 192 raises the total as more paper and printing go into every copy. Your paper choice moves it as well. Try two or three combinations to see where the balance sits for your budget before you commit.

Can I order more than 1000 hardback books?

The listed quantities stop at 1000. For a larger print run, or for a quantity between the listed steps such as 400, send the details through Get a Quote with the size, page count and paper you want, and a price will be worked out for that run.

How should I prepare the files for a hardback book?

The safest choice is a print-ready PDF set up at your chosen finished size, with the pages in reading order. Keep text and page numbers clear of the edges, especially on the side nearest the spine. If you are unsure how to set up the cover artwork, ask the team before you upload anything.

Can you design the book layout for me?

Yes. Choose the Professional artwork and design service at the artwork step instead of supplying your own files. Its cost is printed on the option itself, so you see it before the book goes into your cart. It suits company histories, yearbooks and anniversary books where you have the text and pictures but no designer.

Is there a charge if I supply my own artwork?

No. Choosing "Print-ready - I'll supply my own artwork" adds nothing to the price; you simply upload your finished file with the order. It is the right route if the book has already been laid out by you or a designer. If you are converting from a word processor, a PDF at the finished size is the format to aim for.

What are the steps to order hardback books online?

Set the dropdowns one by one: Size, Paper Type, Lamination, Cover Material, Inner Pages and Quantity. The total moves with every choice. Then pick your artwork route, put the books in your cart and pay by card at checkout through Stripe, with Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay or Google Pay. Extra print can go in the same basket from the online print shop.

Who prints the hardback books?

Books are produced in Manchester by WEB PRINT & SIGNS LIMITED, a print, signs and web company trading since 2003 that has helped over 20,000 UK businesses. You can call 0161 315 1151, message on WhatsApp at 07737 902425 or email hello@webprintsigns.co.uk. Find out more about Web Print Signs.

Can I order two editions of a book in different sizes?

Yes. Each size is a separate configuration, so add each edition to the cart as its own item. An A4 Portrait edition and an A5 Portrait edition of the same title, for instance, would be two cart lines, each with its own artwork file sized to match. Both are then paid for together at one checkout.

Do you deliver hardback books outside Manchester?

Yes, delivery is available anywhere in the UK, and the cost is worked out and shown at checkout before you pay. Many customers around Greater Manchester prefer to collect from the Bury New Road studio instead. The areas we cover page lists the towns and services we work across.

What are hardback books typically used for?

Limited editions, academic theses, corporate histories, anniversary books and photography portfolios are common uses. A hard cover is a good choice when the book needs to last on a shelf or be presented as a keepsake. For shorter documents that need to open flat on a desk, such as manuals, look at Wiro Bound Booklets.

Does a hardback book make a good corporate gift?

It can. A company history, project portfolio or anniversary book printed as a hardback feels more permanent than a stapled brochure and sits well on a client's shelf. Pair it with branded items from our promotional products range to build a gift pack for clients or long-serving staff.

Can I use a hardback book as a wedding or family album?

Yes. The landscape and square sizes on gloss or silk art paper are a sensible starting point for a photo album or family book. Many people order enough copies for each relative to have one; the minimum here is 25. For stationery to match the day itself, see our invitation printing service.

What else helps promote a new book at a launch?

Posters and postcards help spread the word at a launch event, a signing or in a shop window. Indoor Posters work well for displays behind the signing table, and Postcards can carry the cover image, a short blurb and where to buy a copy.
