Getting a shop front noticed on Altrincham’s streets

On George Street and Stamford New Road most people pass on foot, close to the glass. They walk along the frontage rather than facing it, so a projecting sign and clear lettering at eye level often do more work than a larger fascia. Window vinyl showing what you sell and your hours catches people at walking distance.

Around the old town and the Market House the buildings are older, and frontages there tend to suit painted timber fascias, modest lettering and quieter colours. Flat-cut letters or a sign-written look done in cut vinyl can sit well without fighting the building. Signs may need advertisement consent from the council, especially when illuminated or in a conservation area, and we check this with you before anything is made. Your landlord may also need to approve the design.

Broadheath is a different job. Trade and industrial units are read from a car park or a moving vehicle, so letter height, contrast and a short message matter more than detail. The same thinking runs through our shop signs work in Manchester.

Surveying, measuring and fitting at your premises

Every sign begins with an in-person survey by arrangement. We measure the fascia and windows with a laser measure, photograph the frontage, and check what the old sign is fixed to and whether the timber or render behind is sound. We mark fixing points, look for a power supply if the sign is lit, and work out access: ladders, a tower or a platform, pavement width and the quietest time to fit. From our M8 office the drive is typically 35 to 45 minutes, varying with traffic.

Signs are produced through our production network, then our fitters install them, remove old fixings and leave the front tidy.

Six steps from first photo to fitted sign

1

Send a few photos

A picture of your frontage on WhatsApp lets us suggest sign types before anyone visits.

2

Survey on site

We measure, check fixings and access, and note anything that affects the design.

3

Design on your frontage

We place the design on a photo of your actual shop, so you see it at true scale.

4

Check consent and permissions

We talk through whether council consent or landlord approval is likely and supply drawings if needed.

5

Produce the sign

Once the artwork is approved, the sign is made to the surveyed sizes.

6

Fit and tidy

Our fitters install at an agreed time, test any lighting and clear away the old sign.

What is included with your shop sign

  • A measured survey with photos and fixing notes
  • A design mock-up placed on a photo of your shop front
  • Artwork checks on spelling, phone numbers and colours before production
  • A sign built to the agreed size in materials suited to its position
  • Fitting by our fitters, with old fixings removed where agreed
  • Drawings and photos you can pass to your landlord or the council

What we check first on an Altrincham shop front

  • What is behind the old sign: many fascias hide rotten timber or loose render, and we would rather find it at survey than on fitting day.
  • Which way people approach: if most footfall comes from the Interchange end, a projecting sign facing that direction gets seen first.
  • Light and shade: a shaded front may need lit letters or trough lighting to read in winter afternoons, which raises the consent question.
  • Privacy for clinics and salons: treatment rooms facing the street often need frosted vinyl that lets light in but blocks the view.
  • Evening trade: restaurants open after dark often benefit from illuminated signs or halo-lit letters.

Frequently asked questions

Do you survey Altrincham premises before giving a final quote?

Yes. Photos give us an early idea, but the final quote follows a visit by arrangement, because fixing points, fascia condition and access all affect the work. Measuring properly once avoids remaking panels.

Our unit is in Broadheath. Can you make a sign that reads from the road?

Yes. For units seen from a car park or passing traffic we use larger letters, strong contrast and fewer words, usually the name and what you do. We check viewing distances at survey and size the lettering to suit them.

Can you reuse our existing fascia board?

Sometimes. If the board is sound and flat we can clad it with a new aluminium composite panel or fix letters straight to it. If the timber is soft or the frame has moved, we explain the options and show you photos from the survey.

Will we have to close while the sign is fitted?

Usually not. Most fascia and window jobs happen with the shop open, and we can fit early before trading starts. Where a platform blocks the doorway we plan the timing with you at survey stage.

Signs for Sale, Stretford and Chorlton shop fronts

We also make and fit shop signs in Sale, signs for Stretford shops and shop signs in Chorlton. Read more on our Manchester shop signs page, or see the Altrincham print and signage hub for banners, A-boards and printed items.
