Getting a Bolton shop front noticed for the right reasons

The town centre has older Victorian frontages alongside units inside Market Place and Crompton Place. A sign that suits one can look wrong on the other. Centre units often come with landlord rules on size, colour and lighting, while a street frontage raises questions about the fascia board and the wall behind it.

At Middlebrook Retail and Leisure Park in Horwich, by junction 6 of the M61, the challenge is distance. People spot a unit from the car park or the road, so letter height, contrast and illumination matter more than fine detail. Trade counters near the motorway face the same problem.

Signs may need advertisement consent from the council, especially when illuminated or in a conservation area, and we check this with you before anything is made. Landlord permission may be needed too. The wider range we fit is set out on our shop signs page for Manchester.

Measuring up and fitting on site

Every sign starts with an in-person survey. One of our team visits by arrangement, measures the fascia and windows, photographs the frontage and checks what the sign will fix into: timber, brick, render or an existing aluminium tray. We look at where power can reach for illuminated work, and at access, including whether a scaffold tower is needed and where a van can park.

Our office in Cheetham Hill is roughly 25 to 35 minutes away via the A666 and M61 or the A6, depending on traffic. Production goes through our production network, and our fitters return to install, tidy up and take away the old sign if you want it gone.

From first visit to fitted sign

1

Survey the frontage

We measure, photograph and check fixing points, access and power, and note any landlord rules you mention.

2

Draw it to scale

You receive a scaled visual of the sign on a photo of your actual shop front, so size and colour can be judged properly.

3

Check permissions

We go through whether consent or landlord approval may be needed and help gather drawings for any application.

4

Make the sign

Once you approve the final drawing, it is produced through our production network in the agreed materials.

5

Fit and finish

Our fitters install it, seal the fixings, arrange for a qualified electrician to connect any lighting and leave the area clean.

What your shop sign package covers

  • A site survey with measurements, photos and fixing notes
  • Scaled visuals on a photo of your frontage before anything is ordered
  • Advice on materials such as aluminium composite, acrylic or built-up letters
  • Help preparing drawings if advertisement consent is needed
  • Fitting by our fitters, including removal of the old sign on request
  • Matching window graphics or a projecting sign if you want them

What we look at first on a Bolton shop front

Before suggesting a design, we work through a short checklist on site.

  • The fascia board: whether the timber is sound enough to take fixings or needs an aluminium tray over the top.
  • Sight lines: how far away people first see the shop, which sets letter height, and whether a projecting sign would help.
  • Neighbouring frontages: on older parades, a design that respects the building tends to look more established.
  • Lighting: whether trough lights, halo-lit letters or a lit box suit your trading hours and the street after dark.
  • Windows: how much glass can carry vinyl without blocking daylight, and where opening hours read best at eye level.

For lit options see our page on illuminated signs, and for glazing ideas look at window graphics.

Frequently asked questions

Do you survey shop fronts at Middlebrook as well as in the town centre?

Yes. We survey anywhere in the borough by arrangement, including Horwich and the retail park units. Retail park signs usually follow landlord rules on size and position, so bring any tenant pack you have to the survey and we will design within it.

Does the distance from our office affect fitting in Bolton?

Not in practice. We are roughly 25 to 35 minutes away by road depending on traffic, so fitting is planned around access to your premises and your trading hours rather than travel. We agree a fitting date with you once the drawing is approved.

Can you fit a sign outside our opening hours?

Often, yes. We can plan fitting early in the morning or after you close where access allows, so customers are not disrupted. We confirm the time in advance and allow for weather, as some work cannot go ahead in high wind or heavy rain.

Which sign materials last best outdoors?

Aluminium composite panels and built-up acrylic or metal letters are common fascia choices because they stand up well to weather. Printed vinyl on a rigid panel suits simpler signs. We recommend materials based on exposure, the look you want and how long you plan to stay in the premises.

Signs for Bury, Leigh and Salford shops too

We also survey and fit in neighbouring towns: shop signs in Bury, Leigh shop signs and signs for Salford premises. Our main shop signs service explains the full range, and the Bolton print and signage page covers banners and other signs we supply in the town.

Send a photo of your shop front with your ideas, and we will arrange a survey and a fixed quote with no obligation. Get a shop sign quote, speak to us on 0161 315 1151 or send photos by WhatsApp to 07737 902425.
