Getting a shop front noticed in Salford

Ground-floor units under the new apartment and office blocks on Chapel Street and in Greengate often have glass frontages, deep canopies or blank panels set by the developer, so the sign has to suit the building rather than fight it. Shops in and around Salford Shopping Centre in Pendleton face a different challenge: standing out from neighbours on the same parade.

Good signage tells someone walking or driving past what you sell and that you are open, in a couple of seconds. That means a short name, a clear trade line, lettering big enough to read from across the road and lighting that works on dark winter afternoons.

Sign types and materials are covered on our shop signs Manchester page.

Survey, measuring and fitting at your premises

Signs cannot be quoted properly from a photo alone, so we come and look. Our office is just over the Irwell in Cheetham Hill, roughly 10 to 20 minutes away by road depending on the part of town and the traffic, and site visits are booked by arrangement. On the visit we measure the fascia or wall, check what it is made of and where the fixing points can go, look for a power supply if the sign is lit, and note access, parking and whether a tower or ladders are needed.

Design and approvals then happen by email and video call. Once you have signed off the artwork, the sign is made through our production network and our fitters install it, taking down the old sign first if needed.

How a new sign goes up

1

Site survey

Our surveyor visits, measures and photographs the frontage.

2

Design and visual

You get a scaled visual of the sign on a photo of your shop, with colours, sizes and materials stated.

3

Consents checked

Signs may need advertisement consent from the council, especially when illuminated or in a conservation area, and we check this with you before anything is made. Landlord permission may be needed too.

4

Made to size

Once artwork and consents are agreed, the sign is made through our production network to the surveyed sizes.

5

Fitting and handover

Our fitters remove any old sign, fix the new one securely and leave the pavement tidy.

Part of every sign job

  • An on-site survey with measurements and photos
  • A scaled visual showing the sign on your frontage
  • A written specification of materials, sizes and lighting
  • Help checking advertisement consent and landlord permission
  • Installation by our fitters, with fixings suited to the wall

What we look for on a Salford shop front

Every frontage is different, but the survey always works through the same checks.

  • Fascia condition: old timber fascias are often rotten behind the existing panel, and new aluminium composite will not hold securely on them.
  • New-build frontages: developers sometimes set where tenant signs can go and how they are fixed, so we read the relevant part of your lease before designing.
  • Lighting: a trough light or lightbox needs a power supply near the fascia and ideally a timer, which affects both the build and the consent question.
  • Window space: on glass-fronted units, window graphics or frosted vinyl can carry your name and opening hours where there is no fascia.
  • Projecting signs: on a long parade, a projecting sign catches people walking along the pavement.
  • Access: pavement width, loading restrictions and busy roads decide when fitting can happen and what access equipment is needed.

If you want a lit sign, our illuminated signs page covers the options.

Frequently asked questions

We have a new-build unit on Chapel Street. Can we put up any sign we like?

Not always. The building owner or managing agent may control sign positions, sizes and lighting through the lease, and the council may need to grant advertisement consent. We look at the lease terms with you and check consent before anything is made, so the sign does not have to come down later.

Can the survey be booked around our opening hours?

Yes. Site visits are by appointment, and for busy shops near Pendleton an early morning or a quieter weekday slot often works best. How long the survey takes depends on the size of the frontage and whether the sign will be lit, and we tell you roughly when booking.

Can you reuse our existing sign frame?

Sometimes. If the frame or tray is sound and the right size, we can fit new faces or panels to it. If it is corroded or loose, or the wall behind it is damaged, replacing it is safer. We decide on the survey and explain the reason.

Which materials last best outdoors?

For flat fascias, aluminium composite panel with cut vinyl or printed, laminated graphics is a durable choice. Built-up letters in acrylic or stainless steel add depth. Lit signs use LED modules, which run cool and draw modest power. We recommend materials on the survey based on the wall, its exposure and how long you plan to stay.
