What a good sign has to do on a Leigh shop front

The town centre mixes older high street buildings with the more modern units around the Spinning Gate shopping centre. On an older frontage the fascia may be timber over brick and the proportions are set by the building, so an oversized or glossy sign looks out of place. A shopping centre unit usually has fixed sign zones and landlord rules on size, colour and lighting.

Some businesses are hard to find at all. A maker at Leigh Spinners Mill may sit down a corridor or across a yard, so customers need directional signs and a clear door sign. Legibility from across the road and how the sign looks after dark are the questions we start with, just as our shop signs team in Manchester does for city frontages.

Some signs may need advertisement consent from the council, especially when illuminated or in a conservation area, and we check this with you before anything is made. Landlord permission may also be needed.

Survey, measuring and fitting at your premises

Signs cannot be planned from a photo alone. We come to your shop to measure the fascia or wall, check what it is made of and find solid fixing points, because render, old timber and hollow cladding all need different fixings. We note access, such as whether the pavement is wide enough for a tower and where power can reach an illuminated sign. Our office is roughly 35 to 45 minutes away along the A580 depending on traffic, and you are welcome to visit us in M8 to see materials first. Production goes through our production network, and our fitters install the finished sign.

From survey to sign on the wall

1

Book the survey

We arrange a time to visit, measure the frontage and photograph the fixing points and access.

2

Draw the design

You receive a scale drawing of the sign on a photo of your actual shop front, with materials and colours stated.

3

Check consents

We go through whether advertisement consent or landlord approval is likely and help prepare drawings for either.

4

Produce the sign

Once you approve the drawing, the sign is made through our production network to the measured sizes.

5

Fit and tidy up

Our fitters install the sign, seal the fixings against rain, test any lighting and clear up before leaving.

Everything covered in your sign job

  • A site survey with measurements, fixing checks and access notes
  • A scale drawing of the sign shown on your own frontage
  • Help with advertisement consent and landlord approval paperwork
  • Exterior-grade materials such as aluminium composite, acrylic and outdoor vinyl
  • LED lighting on a timer, if you choose an illuminated sign
  • Installation by our fitters, with old signage removed if needed

Choosing the right sign type for your unit

  • Flat fascia panels: aluminium composite with cut vinyl or printed graphics. Practical for most high street frontages and simple to update if you rebrand.
  • Built-up letters: acrylic or metal letters stood off the fascia, adding depth on older brick and timber frontages.
  • Lightboxes and halo-lit letters: useful for takeaways and bars that trade into the evening, including match nights at Leigh Sports Village. These are the signs most likely to need consent.
  • Projecting signs: they catch people walking along the pavement who would never see a flat fascia side-on.
  • Window graphics: opening hours, frosted privacy bands and promotions. Ideal for mill units where the window is the only face you have.

Frequently asked questions

Do signs at the Spinning Gate follow different rules from high street shops in Leigh?

Units in a managed shopping centre normally have landlord or centre rules on sign size, position and lighting, separate from any council consent. We ask for those rules early and design within them, so the drawing you approve can actually be fitted.

How do you fit a sign on an old mill building in Leigh?

Older brick and stone can be soft, and walls are often shared with other tenants, so we check the surface and agree fixing positions with the landlord first. A freestanding sign, a door plaque or window graphics can give mill tenants visibility without drilling the building at all.

Can you take down our old sign first?

Yes. Our fitters can remove an existing fascia, check the board behind it and make good before the new sign goes up. If the old backing is rotten or loose, we tell you at the survey, so it is planned for rather than discovered on fitting day.

Do you make A-boards for shops set back from the street?

Yes. An A-board helps when your entrance is set back or round a corner. Placing one on the pavement can need permission from the highways authority, so check before putting it out. We make them in sizes that fold flat for storage at closing time.

Shop fronts in Bolton, Eccles and Salford as well

We also make and fit shop signs in Bolton, signs for Eccles shops and shop signs in Salford. The Manchester shop signs page shows the full service, and our print and signage page for Leigh covers banners and other printed items for the town.
