Website Security Audit Altrincham
A website security audit checks a working site for weak points before anyone exploits them, and ends with a written report of fixes in order of risk. We audit WordPress sites for Altrincham solicitors, accountants, estate agents, clinics and online shops that collect enquiries or hold customer details.

Why practices and clinics ask for a check
Professional firms are increasingly asked about their website by someone else: a cyber insurer at renewal, a lender, or a larger client sending a supplier questionnaire. Questions such as whether two-factor login is enforced, or when the site was last tested, are hard to answer honestly if nobody has looked. An audit gives you a dated document to point to.
Clinics and salons carry a different exposure. Booking and consultation forms often store names, phone numbers and sometimes health notes inside the WordPress database, where anyone with an editor login can read them. Estate agents tend to collect staff accounts over the years, and a negotiator who left long ago may still be able to log in. We work through these points the same way as our website security audit in Manchester, then explain each one in plain terms.
Running the audit with you, remotely or face to face
We ask for a temporary administrator account and read-only hosting access where your host allows it, then do the checks from our side. Nothing heavy is run against your live site without your agreement, and findings are walked through on a video call with whoever manages the site. Some partners prefer to sit down with the report on paper. You can bring it to our M8 office, a drive of roughly 35 to 45 minutes depending on the M60, or a tram ride from Altrincham Interchange, or we can come to you by arrangement.
What the audit covers, stage by stage
Scope and access
We agree which domains, subdomains and hosting accounts are included, and set up accounts you can delete afterwards.
Vulnerability matching
Core, theme and plugin versions are listed and checked against the WPScan and Patchstack vulnerability databases, with abandoned plugins marked.
Users, roles and logins
Every account is listed with its role and last login, and we test two-factor authentication, password reset behaviour and login rate limiting.
Server and browser settings
We look at the PHP version, permissions on wp-config.php, XML-RPC, directory listing, TLS configuration and the security headers the server sends.
Form data and backups
We note where form entries are stored and who can see them, and with your agreement restore a backup to staging to confirm it works.
Report and call
Findings arrive ranked high, medium and low, each with a fix, and we go through them with you on a call.
In the written report
- A risk-ranked list of findings in plain English
- Plugins and themes with known vulnerabilities or no recent updates
- Every user account with its role, and those we suggest removing
- Header and TLS results with recommended settings
- Where personal data from forms is stored and who can read it
- The outcome of the backup restore test
- An optional fixed quote to carry out the fixes
Gaps we often find on professional and clinic sites in Altrincham
- Former staff with administrator or editor accounts still active.
- Form plugins keeping every enquiry indefinitely, with no retention setting switched on.
- Two-factor login installed but never enforced for administrators.
- An old development copy of the site left publicly reachable on a subdomain.
- Cookie banners that load analytics before the visitor has chosen, which our cookie consent setup can correct.
- No HSTS header, even though the site already runs on HTTPS.
An audit is not a clean-up. If we see signs the site has already been breached, we stop and recommend malware removal instead. Fixing the findings and keeping them fixed afterwards is what WordPress maintenance is for.
Frequently asked questions
Is an audit the same as a penetration test?
No. An audit reviews configuration, software and access against known weaknesses, mostly by reading settings rather than attacking anything. A penetration test actively tries to break in and needs a separate written agreement. If an insurer or client specifically asks for one, tell us and we will discuss scope before quoting.
Our Altrincham firm has been sent a supplier security questionnaire. Can the audit help answer it?
Often, yes. Many questions cover patching, two-factor login, backups and who has access, and the report gives dated findings on each. It is not a compliance certificate, so take advice on what the client or insurer actually requires in your situation.
Can you present the findings to our partners in the town?
Yes. By arrangement we can go through the report at your office, which suits firms where several partners need to agree spending on fixes. Otherwise a video call works well, and anyone is welcome to come to us in Cheetham Hill.
Will you need access to our clients’ data?
Checking settings needs an administrator account, which technically allows access to stored form entries. We look only at how entries are stored and who can read them, not at their content, and you can remove our account as soon as the report is delivered.
