Website Security Audit Hyde

A website security audit is a structured check of how well your site would stand up to the attacks WordPress sites face all the time, followed by a written report setting out each weakness and its fix. We carry these out for Hyde manufacturers, trade suppliers, care providers and retailers who want answers before trouble arrives.

Why Hyde firms ask for a security check

The request often starts outside the business. A larger customer of a Hyde manufacturer or trade supplier sends a supplier questionnaire asking how the website and online systems are protected, and nobody in the office knows the answer.

Care providers usually come to us because of access. Their sites collect enquiries from families and applications from candidates, and over the years logins pile up. Retailers and food businesses near Hyde Market tend to ask whether their online orders and checkout are set up safely.

An audit looks for weak points on a site that is working normally. It is not a clean-up of a hacked site, and not a penetration test unless we agree one in writing. Our website security audit for Manchester businesses describes the full method.

Remote checks, plus a sit-down if you want one

The checks run remotely through a temporary WordPress administrator account and limited hosting access where your host offers it, and you can remove both when we finish. We go through the findings on a video call with screen sharing. If you would rather talk across a table, our M8 office is about 25 to 30 minutes from Hyde via the M67 and M60, traffic allowing, and we can also visit you by arrangement.

Stages of the audit

1

Set the boundaries

We agree in writing which domains, sites and hosting accounts are in scope and which tests are allowed.

2

Match software to known flaws

Plugin and theme versions are checked against public vulnerability records such as WPScan and Patchstack, and abandoned plugins are flagged.

3

Check people and passwords

We list each user with their role and last login, and test login limits and two-factor authentication.

4

Examine the server side

PHP version, wp-config.php settings, file permissions, XML-RPC, directory listing and security headers are all looked at.

5

Restore a backup privately

With your agreement, the latest backup goes onto a staging copy to confirm it would really get you back online.

6

Hand over the report

Findings are ranked high, medium or low, each with a clear fix, and we talk you through them.

Your audit pack

  • A written report ranking each finding by risk, in plain language
  • A user and role table showing who should keep access
  • Plugin and theme versions with published vulnerabilities marked
  • Server, PHP and header results with recommended settings
  • The backup restore result, pass or fail
  • A one-page summary you can share with a customer or insurer
  • An optional fixed quote for us to carry out the fixes

Who still holds the keys: access problems on Hyde sites

On sites run by care providers, trade suppliers and family firms, the most serious findings are often about people rather than code.

  • Former staff still listed as administrators. Someone who left years ago can often still sign in. Current staff should have the lowest role that does the job, such as Editor or Shop Manager.
  • One shared login for the whole office. Nobody can tell who changed what. Named accounts with two-factor login fix that.
  • The original designer’s account. Agencies often keep full access long after the work ended. If they still help you, their account should be limited.
  • Hosting and domain logins tied to one person’s email. If that inbox is lost, so is control of the site.
  • Passwords reused from elsewhere. One leak from another service can open the site.

Once access is tidied, WordPress maintenance keeps updates and users in order. If we spot signs of an existing infection, we stop and recommend malware removal first.

Frequently asked questions

Can you audit our site without visiting our Hyde premises?

Yes. Every check works through WordPress and hosting access, so nobody needs to travel. If you want the report explained in person, we can visit by arrangement, or you can call in at our Cheetham Hill office.

A major customer has sent our Hyde factory a supplier security questionnaire. Will the report help?

It gives you documented facts about the website to answer the technical questions accurately. It is not a certification or compliance sign-off, and many questionnaires cover wider IT systems than the website, so take advice on anything the report does not address.

Will the checks slow the site or set off our host’s firewall?

Most checks simply read settings and versions. We avoid aggressive scanning unless agreed, and anything that writes data, such as the restore test, happens on a separate staging copy, so visitors notice nothing.

Our site takes enquiries from families about care. Do you look at the forms?

Yes. We check whether entries are stored in the database, who can read them and how long they are kept. We follow published ICO guidance when describing findings, but you should take advice on your own data protection duties.

Security checks in neighbouring towns

We run the same audit for firms through website security audits in Ashton-under-Lyne, Droylsden and Stockport. The Manchester security audit page lists the full scope, and the Hyde hub covers our print, signage and web services in the town.

Tell us your web address and what prompted the check, whether a questionnaire, a worry or a change of staff, and we will reply with a proposed scope and a fixed quote. Request a security audit quote, phone 0161 315 1151 or WhatsApp us on 07737 902425.
