WordPress Speed Optimisation Burnley

A Burnley manufacturer’s website often has one job: convince a buyer who has never heard of you that the firm is substantial and competent. A page that takes six seconds to show anything argues the opposite before a word is read, and the cause is nearly always measurable.

The weight is usually in the photography

Industrial websites tend to carry a lot of images, and rightly so, because photographs of the shop floor, the machinery and finished work do more persuading than any amount of text. The problem is that those pictures normally go up exactly as they came off the camera or the phone.

A single image of that kind can outweigh an entire page of content several times over, and a gallery of them turns a decent site into an unusable one on a mobile connection. Fixing it does not mean fewer or worse photographs. It means the same pictures, resized to what the page actually displays and converted properly, which our WordPress speed optimisation service in Manchester does as standard.

Who is waiting, and on what

Buyers and specifiers often look at suppliers on a desktop at work, where a slow site is annoying rather than fatal. The fatal case is the second look, taken on a phone later, where several suppliers are open at once and the slowest gets closed.

Town centre and Weavers’ Triangle businesses selling to the public are in the first category entirely: found on a phone, judged in seconds. Google states its thresholds openly, at 2.5 seconds for Largest Contentful Paint, 200 milliseconds for Interaction to Next Paint and 0.1 for Cumulative Layout Shift, and those are the numbers we work to.

How we work with Burnley firms

All of this runs remotely, because examining a website needs nobody in the room. Our Brierfield base is a short drive from Burnley town centre, so if you would rather sit down and go through the before and after figures together, that is easy enough to arrange.

The order of work

1

Measure the pages that matter

Field data from real visitors where it exists, controlled runs where it does not, taken on the pages that generate enquiries.

2

Open the request waterfall

Every file the browser fetches, in order, with its weight and delay. The cause is nearly always visible here.

3

Cut the weight

Dead plugins removed, the rest restricted to pages that use them, images resized to their displayed dimensions and converted to a modern format.

4

Configure the server

PHP version, object cache, page cache and compression at server level rather than through a plugin, with a content delivery network only where the measurements justify paying for one.

5

Re-measure and report

The same tests repeated, both sets of figures together, and a line on each change explaining what it bought.

What you are handed

  • Core Web Vitals before and after for your key pages, measured the same way
  • An itemised list of what was removed, replaced or restricted, with reasons
  • Every image resized, converted and deferred below the fold
  • Caching and compression set up on the server itself
  • Script and font loading ordered so the page stops jumping as it appears
  • A note on what would gradually undo the work

When the server is the limit

Occasionally the site is fine and the hosting is not. The symptom is a long delay before the first byte arrives even on a simple page, and no amount of image work will touch it. Where that is what the measurements show, we say so and explain what a hosting migration involves rather than selling you optimisation that cannot help.

Where the site is carrying serious photography, which is the usual finding here, image optimisation delivers most of the gain on its own, and Core Web Vitals optimisation covers the measurement side in more depth.

Frequently asked questions

Will our photographs look worse?

They should not, and we check on a real screen rather than trusting a setting. The saving comes from serving an image at the size it is displayed instead of at camera resolution, which the viewer cannot see. Where a picture genuinely needs to stay large, it stays large and loads later.

Can you work on it without taking the site down?

Yes. The work happens on a copy and moves across once you have approved the result, so the live site keeps trading throughout. The switch itself is a matter of minutes and we agree when it happens.

Our site is mostly text. Why would it be slow?

Usually plugins. A text-heavy site loading eleven plugins on every page, several of them unused, can easily be slower than a picture-heavy one that is tidy. The waterfall settles it in a few minutes, and we measure before quoting.

Does this need doing again later?

It drifts back if plugins keep being added and full-size pictures keep going up, because that is how it got here. The handover note names the habits to watch, and WordPress maintenance is there if you would rather it was looked after.
