WordPress Speed Optimisation Wigan

WordPress speed optimisation for Wigan businesses whose site has grown heavy and slow. We measure what the page is really doing, remove the weight that is not earning its place, and show you the figures before and after so the change is visible rather than claimed.

What a slow site costs a Wigan business

Most people reach a local site on a phone, often on a patchy signal. Someone on the train between Wigan Wallgate and Manchester will not wait out a page that sits blank while a slider loads. Shoppers between the Grand Arcade and The Galleries check opening times one-handed, and if the page stalls they open the next result instead.

Manufacturing and distribution firms near the M6 and M58 have a different problem. Their sites carry long product lists with photographs straight from a camera, and a buyer comparing suppliers will not wait while twenty of them download. Trades and professional services have lighter sites, but years of added plugins leave them loading scripts for features nobody uses.

Google publishes the thresholds it measures against: Largest Contentful Paint within 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint within 200 milliseconds, and Cumulative Layout Shift under 0.1. Our WordPress speed optimisation service in Manchester works to those same numbers, and the same people do the work for sites in Wigan.

How the work runs with you

Nearly all of it happens remotely. You share hosting and WordPress access, we work on a staging copy, and you see the figures as they move. Nothing goes near the live site until you have seen what changed.

If you would rather talk it through face to face, you are welcome at our Cheetham Hill office, or we can come to you by arrangement. The drive is roughly 40 to 50 minutes on the M61 or the A580 East Lancashire Road, so we set aside a morning for it.

The order we work in

1

Measure first

We record the current Core Web Vitals from real field data where it exists, plus lab runs on the pages that bring you enquiries. Those numbers are the baseline everything is judged against.

2

Find the weight

A waterfall shows what the browser is really fetching. Usually it is a few plugins loading on every page, a slider, several icon fonts and photographs saved far larger than they are displayed.

3

Cut before caching

Caching a bloated page only hides the problem. We remove or replace what is not needed, limit the rest to the pages that use it, and resize and convert images to WebP.

4

Set the server properly

PHP version, object caching, a sensible page cache and compression, with a content delivery network where it genuinely helps rather than by default.

5

Measure again

We rerun the same tests on the same pages, show you both sets of figures side by side and explain what each change did.

What you have at the end

  • Before and after Core Web Vitals for your main pages, from the same tests
  • A written list of every plugin removed, replaced or restricted, and why
  • Images resized to what the design actually uses, converted and lazy loaded
  • Caching and compression configured at the server rather than bolted on
  • Fonts and scripts loaded in an order that stops the page jumping as it draws
  • A short note on what will slow it down again

What usually turns out to be the cause

Page builders come up most often. They are convenient to edit and they ship a great deal of markup and script with every page, including pages that use none of it. Next are sliders on a home page, which delay the one thing a visitor came for. Then images: a photograph off a phone can be several thousand pixels wide and get displayed at a few hundred, so the browser downloads all of it and throws most away.

Speed work overlaps with other things worth fixing, so we flag them rather than quietly bill for them. If the site is also out of date, WordPress maintenance keeps it from drifting back, and if hosting is the real limit we will say so and discuss a hosting migration instead of tuning around it.

Frequently asked questions

Will any of this change how the site looks?

Not unless you ask us to. The aim is the same design arriving faster. Occasionally a slider or animation is so costly that we will recommend replacing it, but that is a conversation and your decision, not something we do quietly while we are in there.

Do you need to visit us in Wigan to do this?

No. The work is done remotely on a staging copy and you watch the figures move. We are happy to come out if you would rather go through it in person, which owners more often want for the handover than for the work itself.

Our hosting is very basic. Is tuning still worth it?

Often yes, because plugin weight and oversized images usually cost more than the server does. We measure first. If the hosting really is the limit, we will tell you that plainly rather than spend time tuning around something tuning cannot fix.

How long before the scores in Search Console move?

Lab tests change the moment the work goes live. The field data Google reports is collected from real visitors over a rolling period, so it catches up more gradually. We show you both so you are not waiting on one number without seeing the other.
