Mobile App Development Wigan

Mobile app development for Wigan businesses that have outgrown a spreadsheet and a group chat. We scope the job honestly first, because plenty of ideas are better served by a web page than by an app, and build in stages you can see and stop.

When a Wigan business genuinely needs an app

The strongest cases are people working away from a desk. Distribution and manufacturing firms around the M6 and M58 have drivers and yard staff recording jobs on paper that gets typed up later, if it survives the van. A field service team wants the next job, the address and the history on a phone, and wants it to still work in a signal blackspot between sites.

Retail and leisure is different. A loyalty scheme or a booking app only earns its place if customers would open it more than twice, and for a single shop in the Grand Arcade the honest answer is often that a fast mobile site does the same work with nothing to install. Rugby league and leisure operators with fixtures and ticketing have a better case, because people come back on a schedule.

We talk this through before quoting. Our mobile app development in Manchester starts the same way, and the same team builds for Wigan.

How a build runs with you

Most of it is remote: a staging build you install on your own phone at the end of each stage, so you are judging something real rather than a document. You see it working early and can change direction while that is still easy to do.

For field service work we usually want one visit to watch the job as it is done now, because the paperwork never matches the practice. Our Cheetham Hill office is open to you, or we come to Wigan by arrangement, around 40 to 50 minutes on the M61 or the A580.

The stages we work through

1

Decide if it should exist

We establish who opens it, how often, and what breaks if they do not. If a website answers that better, we say so before you commit.

2

Agree the first version

One job done properly beats five half built. We write down what is in and what is deliberately left for later.

3

Design the screens

You see the actual screens before any of it is built, which is when changes cost nothing.

4

Build in visible stages

Each stage ends with something you can install and use. Nothing is hidden until a grand reveal.

5

Test on real phones

Old handsets, poor signal, interrupted jobs. Field apps fail on those, not in the office.

6

Publish and support

We handle the App Store and Play listings, the review process and what happens when the operating systems update.

What is delivered

  • An app on iOS and Android, built from one codebase unless there is reason not to
  • Screens agreed with you before building, not after
  • Sensible behaviour with no signal, with work saved and sent when it returns
  • Store listings prepared and submitted, with the review handled for you
  • The source code and the store accounts in your name
  • A written note of what the first version deliberately leaves out

The question worth settling first

An app has to be installed, and that is a real barrier. Something customers use once a year will not survive on a phone, whereas a tool your own staff open every shift will. So we split the question: is this for customers, where installation has to be earned, or for your team, where you can simply require it.

For staff tools the case is usually easy, because the paper and the retyping already cost more than the build. For customer apps we are more cautious, and often a progressive web app gives most of the benefit with nothing to download. Where the idea is sound but large, an MVP build tests it before the full spend.

Frequently asked questions

Do we need separate iOS and Android versions?

Rarely. We normally build one codebase that produces both, which keeps the cost and the later changes down. Where an app leans heavily on something specific to one platform we will explain the trade-off rather than decide it quietly.

Will it work where there is no signal?

It can, and for field work it must. The app holds the job on the device and sends it when the connection returns, so a driver in a blackspot is not stuck. We test that deliberately rather than assuming it.

Who owns the app and the store accounts?

You do. The listings go in your business name and the source code is yours. We will not hold either as a way of keeping your custom, and we hand over whatever is needed for someone else to take it on.

Can you come and watch how our drivers work?

Yes, and for field apps we would rather. An hour watching the round tells us things no specification captures, particularly the awkward moments the app has to survive. We ask for a morning, given the drive each way.

Building for Leigh and Bolton too

We take this work across the west of the region, so mobile app development in Leigh and mobile app development in Bolton cover the same service. The rest of what we do nearby is on the services in Wigan page.

Describe the job your team does on paper and we will tell you whether an app is the right answer. Ask for a quote, ring 0161 315 1151 or message 07737 902425.
