Altrincham has a lot of professional and health businesses: solicitors, accountants, estate agents, dental and beauty clinics. Many sit in converted buildings with glass partitions added inside, or in shopfronts with full-height glass doors. Clear glass looks smart but is easy to miss, especially for visitors who do not know the building.

Building Regulations guidance in England asks for large areas of clear glazing in busy places to be marked so people can see them. Measuring every pane

Manifestation has to sit at the right heights, so we visit and measure each pane, the door positions and the floor level. Altrincham is roughly 35 to 45 minutes from our office in Cheetham Hill, depending on traffic, and we can fit in the evening or at a weekend so patients and clients are not disturbed.

Getting the heights right

The usual approach is two bands, one between 850mm and 1000mm from the floor and another between 1400mm and 1600mm. Dots, squares or a logo can make up the band, as long as they stand out against whatever is behind the glass. A white logo on glass in front of a white wall can be hard to see, so we check contrast on site.

Clinics and treatment rooms usually need more than a band. A common layout is frosted film from just above the floor to above head height, with a clear strip at the top to let light through, and the practice name or logo cut into the frosting at eye level. That gives patients privacy and makes the glass obvious to anyone walking up to it.

Offices with glass meeting rooms often go the other way: a narrow frosted band with the room name, so the room still feels open but nobody walks into the door. If you are not sure which suits, we bring samples of film to the survey so you can hold them against the glass and see the difference.
