Questions & answers

Quick answers

What envelope sizes can be printed?

Three sizes are listed: DL (220 x 110mm), C5 (229 x 162mm) and C4 (324 x 229mm). DL takes an A4 letter folded in three, C5 takes an A5 sheet flat or A4 folded once, and C4 takes A4 flat. Match the size to what you post most often, such as our Letterheads.

Can I get window envelopes?

Yes. The Window dropdown has Yes and No. A window lets the address printed on your letter or invoice show through, so nobody has to write or print it on the envelope. The configurator shows the live price with or without a window. For invoice books to go inside, see our invoice books service.

What print options are there for envelopes?

The Sides Printed dropdown has four choices: Black Only on Face, Black Only Both Sides, Full Colour on Face and Full Colour Both Sides. Black Only Both Sides is the standard specification. Full colour suits logos with several colours, while black is plenty for a logo and return address. See envelope printing in Manchester for the local service.

How much do printed envelopes cost?

500 envelopes start at £178.46, the cheapest combination of size, paper, print and window for that quantity. 1000 envelopes start at £212.98, so the price per envelope falls as the run grows. The configurator shows the live price for your choices. For quantities past 50000, use Get a Quote.

What is the minimum order for printed envelopes?

The Quantity dropdown starts at 500 envelopes and runs to 50000, with steps such as 1000, 2000, 5000 and 10000 in between. If you send relatively little post, 500 is the place to start and will last a while. Pair them with matching Compliment Slips for short notes that go out in the same envelope.

How long do printed envelopes take?

Typical turnaround is around 5 working days. Treat that as a guide and allow for delivery on top, unless you collect from our Manchester studio. If a mailing has a fixed send date, talk to us before ordering so the timing can be checked against your plans.

Are the envelopes self seal?

Yes. Both paper options are self seal: 90gsm White Self Seal, which is the standard specification, and 100gsm White Self Seal. Self seal means there is no licking or moistening, which helps when you are stuffing a large mailing by hand. For the contents of a campaign, see direct mail flyers.

Asked by buyers 22

Should I choose 90gsm or 100gsm envelopes?

90gsm White Self Seal is the standard specification and suits everyday post. 100gsm White Self Seal is the heavier of the two and gives a firmer envelope, which some firms prefer for contracts and client documents. The configurator updates the price when you switch. For paperwork handed over in person, compare our Glued Folders.

Are coloured envelopes available?

No, both papers on this page are white. Colour comes from the print instead: choose Full Colour on Face or Full Colour Both Sides to add your brand colours to a white envelope. For a coloured stock, describe what you need on the quote form and the team will look into it.

Which envelope fits an A4 sheet without folding?

C4 (324 x 229mm) is the size for A4 sheets sent flat, such as certificates, brochures and reports that should not be creased. It is the largest of the three sizes on this page. If you are posting certificates, our certificate printing service can print those too.

Is DL the right envelope size for invoices?

Yes. DL (220 x 110mm) is the usual choice for invoices and letters folded into three. Add a window so the customer address printed on the invoice shows through, and you skip addressing each envelope by hand. For handwritten invoices with copies, see Carbonless (NCR) Books.

What fits in a C5 envelope?

C5 (229 x 162mm) takes an A5 sheet flat or an A4 sheet folded in half. It suits greeting cards, invitations, slim booklets and A5 flyers, and it gives a mailing a different shape from standard letter post. For cards to put inside, see greeting card printing.

Can I have printing on the back of the envelope?

Yes. Choose Black Only Both Sides or Full Colour Both Sides if you want print on the back as well as the face. The back is a common place for a return address or a short message. For anything outside these four print choices, phone the team on 0161 315 1151 to talk it through.

What do 5000 envelopes cost?

5000 envelopes start at £443.76 on the cheapest combination of options. Switching to full colour, a window or 100gsm paper may change the figure, and the configurator shows the live price for each combination. Many businesses order Letterheads in matching numbers so letters and envelopes run out together.

Can I order 750 envelopes?

The dropdown lists set quantities starting at 500, 1000 and 2000, so 750 is not an option. Choose 1000 and keep the spare envelopes for later post, or ask for an exact quantity through the contact page and the team will advise what is possible.

Are big envelope runs worth it?

If your address and logo are settled, yes. 10000 envelopes start at £700.01, which brings the cost of each one well below a run of 500. Planning ahead for a year of post means you are not reordering every few months. See the shop for the rest of your stationery.

What artwork do I need for an envelope?

A print-ready PDF at the size of envelope you chose is the safest choice, with the logo and return address placed where you want them printed. If you picked a window, keep that area free of design. For help with layout, choose the design service or contact our studio.

Can the design service lay out my envelope?

Yes. Add the Professional artwork and design service for +£36.00 at the artwork step, and a designer will set your logo, return address and any message on the envelope. Mention whether you chose a window so the layout works around it. Our corporate stationery page shows how matching sets come together.

Where should the return address go on a business envelope?

Many businesses put the return address on the back flap and the logo top left on the face. Choose a Both Sides print option if you want both. Keep the face clear where the recipient address and stamp or franking mark will go, so post handling is not affected. Our business envelopes in Manchester page has more layout pointers.

How do I order printed envelopes?

Select Size, Paper Type, Sides Printed, Window and Quantity in the dropdowns, and the price updates live. Choose your artwork option, add to cart and pay by card at checkout. Stripe takes Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay and Google Pay. Browse the full stationery range to complete a set.

Can I order two envelope sizes together?

Yes. Set up the first size and add it to your cart, then go back and configure the second. Many firms keep DL for letters and C4 for documents sent flat. Both lines are paid together at checkout, and each can carry its own artwork. For a third item in the same order, add A4 Continuation Sheets.

Can I collect envelopes from your studio?

Yes. Collection is available from Unit 3, 116 Bury New Road, Manchester M8 8EB. Allow around 5 working days for printing before you plan to collect. Larger orders such as 10000 envelopes take up a fair amount of space, so bring a suitable vehicle. More about us is on the about page.

Is UK delivery available for envelopes?

Yes. UK delivery is available, and the cost is shown at checkout before you pay. It is worked out from your order and address, so check it at checkout before confirming. Our areas we cover page lists the towns and services we work with most often.

Why use printed envelopes instead of plain ones?

A printed envelope tells the recipient who the letter is from before they open it, which helps invoices and important letters get noticed rather than left in a pile. It also keeps your brand consistent across every piece of post you send. See letterhead printing for what goes inside.

Are printed envelopes good for direct mail?

Yes. Full Colour on Face lets you print an offer or message on the front, which gives a mailing a reason to be opened. Plan quantities against your mailing list, starting from 500. For the leaflet that goes inside, see leaflet printing.

Can I use these envelopes for event invitations?

Yes. C5 (229 x 162mm) suits A5 invitations, and Full Colour on Face lets you carry the event branding onto the envelope itself. With a minimum of 500, they suit larger events or a year of company occasions. For the invitations themselves, see invitation printing.

Do charities use printed envelopes?

Yes, for donation appeals, thank-you letters and receipts. A DL window envelope pairs well with a letter that carries the donor's address, and a printed logo on the face helps the envelope get opened. For donation receipts with copies, see receipt books.

Can envelopes match the rest of my stationery?

Yes. Use the same logo and colours as your letterheads and compliment slips, and choose Full Colour on Face if your brand relies on colour. Ordering everything in one cart keeps the set together and the artwork consistent. Business cards complete the look, and our business cards Manchester page covers them.

Can WPS help with branding beyond envelopes?

Yes. Since 2003 the business has handled print, signs, vehicle graphics, websites and SEO for over 20,000 UK businesses, so envelopes can sit alongside a shop sign or a new website using the same branding. See our services overview for the full list.
