Advertisement Consent Burnley
A new illuminated sign, projecting sign or large sign for a business in Burnley may need advertisement consent from Burnley Borough Council before it goes up. From our Brierfield base next door, we design the sign, prepare the drawings and plans, submit the application for you and fit the sign once it is approved.

Signs in Burnley that may need consent
Burnley’s town centre and its historic mill buildings, including the canal-side area known as the Weavers’ Triangle, have a lot of character, and the council looks at how new signs suit older buildings, especially listed buildings and conservation areas. Lit signs and projecting signs in the town centre are the most likely to need an application. Along the M65, large signs high on industrial buildings and freestanding signs near roads raise their own questions.
Simple, unlit fascias of a normal size often need no application. We check which applies before anything is made. Our advertisement consent Manchester page explains the general rules.
How we work
Our Brierfield base is a short drive from Burnley town centre, so the survey visit is easy to arrange. We measure and photograph the building and street, then prepare the design, drawings and application remotely, sending drafts to you to check.
From survey to sign
Look at the building
We photograph the frontage from the street and measure the space for the sign.
Agree the look
You choose between options for material, size and lighting, mocked up on your photo.
Produce the plans
We draw the sign to scale and prepare the location and site plans the council asks for.
Lodge the application
The application goes to Burnley Borough Council and we deal with any questions.
Build and install
With consent granted, the sign is made and fitted exactly as approved.
Your application pack
- A photo mock-up of the sign on your Burnley building
- Scaled drawings showing size, materials, colours and fixings
- Details of how and how brightly the sign is lit
- Location and site plans
- The application itself, lodged for you
- Any amended drawings the planning officer requests
Signs on mill buildings and stone frontages
Burnley’s stone buildings and former mills suit signs that respect their proportions and materials: painted or individually lettered fascias, modest boards by the entrance, and lighting that is soft and directed rather than a glowing box. Fixing into mortar joints rather than the face of the stone means a sign can be removed later without scarring the building, which matters on historic frontages.
If a building is listed, listed building consent may be needed as well as advertisement consent, and we prepare the drawings with that in mind. Many mill buildings also have owners with their own sign rules, which we design to.
For industrial units along the M65, a sign within the main face of the building, sized to be read from the road and lit at a sensible level, is usually the simplest route to approval. We show options on a photo of your building first.
For the sign itself, see fascia signs and illuminated signs, or our Burnley signs page.
Plan the timing early. The council needs several weeks to decide, and the sign is only made once consent is granted, so if you are opening on a fixed date, start the application as soon as the lease is agreed. Tell us your date when you first get in touch and we will plan backwards from it.
A few photos of the frontage from across the street, sent with your first message, help us spot anything that affects the design before the survey.
Frequently asked questions
Is Burnley Borough Council the authority that decides?
Yes. Signs in Burnley go to Burnley Borough Council as the local planning authority, and we lodge the application and supporting drawings with them on your behalf.
We lease space in a former mill. Who else needs to agree?
Usually the building owner or managing agent, who may have a sign scheme for the whole mill. We send them the drawings at the same time, so their approval and the council’s run side by side.
Roughly how long from first call to fitted sign in Burnley?
The council’s decision usually takes several weeks. Add a week or two either side for the survey and drawings, and for making the sign once consent arrives, and you have a realistic plan.
Will the application fee be extra?
No. The council’s fee is built into our quote, so the figure you approve is what you pay for the application side.
Our old sign never had consent. Does that matter now?
It can be a good moment to put things right. Send photos and we will tell you whether the new sign needs an application and how to approach it.
If Burnley refuses the sign, is that the end?
Not usually. A refusal comes with reasons, and many can be met by changing size, lighting or position. We talk you through whether a revised application is worth it.
