Advertisement Consent Rochdale
Rochdale’s Victorian town centre and its business parks near the M62 both raise questions when a new sign goes up. Lit signs, projecting signs and large signs may need advertisement consent from Rochdale Borough Council. We design the sign, prepare the drawings and plans, submit the application and fit the sign once it is approved.

Signs in a town with strong character
Rochdale town centre has many fine older buildings, with the Victorian Town Hall at its heart, and the council looks closely at how signs suit them, especially on listed buildings and in conservation areas. Illuminated and projecting signs on these streets are the most likely to need an application. Newer shopping at Riverside and the Exchange usually has landlord sign rules on top of anything the council needs.
At Kingsway Business Park and the estates near junction 21 of the M62, large signs high on buildings and freestanding totems by the road are the usual questions. Our advertisement consent Manchester page explains the general rules.

Designing for older buildings
On a Victorian frontage, the signs that suit the building best are usually the ones that respect its proportions: a fascia within the original fascia zone, individual letters or a painted finish rather than a deep plastic box, and lighting that is soft and directed rather than a glowing panel. Fixings into mortar joints rather than the face of stone or brick allow the sign to be removed later without scarring the building.
Signs designed this way are often more likely to be approved, and they tend to look better too. If the building is listed, listed building consent may also be needed, and we prepare drawings with that in mind.
On the business parks, the priority is legibility from the road without overwhelming the building or distracting drivers. A sign sized to be read from the estate road, within the main face of the building, is usually the simplest route.
Landlord approval is separate. For the sign itself, see fascia signs and illuminated signs, or shop signs Rochdale.
Plan the timing early. The council needs several weeks to decide, and the sign is only made once consent is granted, so if you are opening on a fixed date, start as soon as the lease is agreed. Tell us your date when you first get in touch and we will plan backwards from it.
Frequently asked questions
Which council handles sign applications in Rochdale?
Rochdale Borough Council is the local planning authority. We prepare and submit the application for you.
Our shop is in an older building. Will that make a difference?
It can. Signs on older or listed buildings and in conservation areas are looked at more closely, so the design matters more.
How long does it take?
Several weeks for the decision, plus the survey and drawings before and production after.
Is the council fee in the quote?
Yes. We include it so you see the full cost.
Can we put a sign up before consent?
It is safer to wait, as an unapproved sign that needed consent can face enforcement.
What if it is refused?
We review the reasons, revise the design and discuss whether to apply again.
