Signs in Trafford Park and Stretford
Businesses in Trafford Park want to be seen from busy estate roads and main routes, which often means large letters high on buildings, illuminated signs and tall totems at entrances. Size, height, lighting and closeness to roads are what the council looks at. Estate management usually has its own signage rules too.
In Stretford, lit shop signs and projecting signs around Stretford Mall and the parades are the most likely to need an application. Modest unlit fascias often do not. Our advertisement consent Manchester page explains the general rules.
How we work
Stretford is roughly 20 to 25 minutes from our office via the A56 and Chester Road, depending on traffic. We visit to measure and photograph the site, including where any totem would stand, then prepare the drawings and application remotely, sending drafts to you to check.

Totems and building signs on a business estate
On a large estate, drivers need to find the right unit quickly, so totems and building signs matter. The council looks at whether a sign near a road could distract or confuse drivers, and how bright it is at night. A totem positioned clear of junctions and sightlines, at a sensible height and with moderate lighting, is far more likely to be accepted, and it is still easy to read from a vehicle.
Building signs work best within the main face of the building rather than above the roofline, and at a size readable from the estate road. We show options on a photo of your building before the drawings are fixed.
Estate management approval is usually needed as well as council consent, and we send them the same drawings. For the sign itself, see illuminated signs and fascia signs, or shop signs Stretford.
Shops and hospitality businesses in Stretford with lit signs have a different concern: homes nearby. Individual letters with soft lighting, or a darker face with only the lettering lit, are usually more acceptable than a bright white lightbox, while still clearly visible at night.
Plan the timing early. The council needs several weeks and the sign is only made after consent, so if you are moving into a unit on a fixed date, start as soon as the lease is agreed. Tell us your date at the start and we will plan backwards from it.
Send a few photos of the building and entrance from the road with your first message, so we can spot anything that affects the design before we visit.
Frequently asked questions
Is it Trafford Council for both Stretford and Trafford Park?
Yes. Both sit within Trafford, so Trafford Council decides sign applications across the town and the estate.
Our estate manager has a signage guide. Do you follow it?
Yes. We design within the estate guide first, then prepare the council application, so you are not caught between two different sets of rules.
Can a gate totem be lit?
Often, at a moderate brightness and positioned away from junctions. We set the lighting level in the application rather than leaving it vague.
We are near Old Trafford. Does that change anything?
Busy roads and crowds on match days mean signs near main routes are looked at for driver distraction. A clear, sensibly sized sign is the safest approach.
How is the fee handled?
It is included in our quote, so the price you agree covers the council fee as well as our drawings and submission.
What happens after approval?
We make the sign to the approved drawings and fit it, keeping to any conditions the council attached, such as limits on lighting hours.
