Advertisement Consent Bury
A new illuminated or projecting sign for a shop or business in Bury may need advertisement consent from Bury Council before it can go up. We design the sign, prepare the drawings and plans, submit the application on your behalf and then make and fit the sign once consent is granted.

Bury signs and the council
Bury town centre has older buildings around the market and the main streets, as well as modern shopping areas like The Rock. On older buildings, the council looks at how a sign suits the frontage. In newer centres, landlords often have their own sign rules on top of anything the council needs.
Lit signs, projecting signs and anything high or large are the most likely to need an application. Simple non-illuminated fascias often do not. We check which applies before the sign is made. Our advertisement consent Manchester page explains the general rules.
How we help Bury businesses
We come out to measure the building and photograph the frontage and street. Bury is roughly 25 to 35 minutes straight up Bury New Road from our office, depending on traffic. After the visit, the drawings and application are prepared remotely and sent to you to check.
The application step by step
Survey the frontage
We measure and photograph the building.
Design the sign
Size, colour and lighting are planned with approval in mind.
Drawings and plans
We prepare scaled drawings, a location plan and a site plan.
Submit and follow up
We submit and respond to the planning officer.
Make and fit
The approved sign is produced and fitted to the drawings.
What we prepare
- A visual of the sign on your building
- Front and side drawings with sizes and materials
- Lighting details for illuminated signs
- Location and site plans
- The submitted application
- Updated drawings if the council asks for changes
Choosing a sign that suits the building
The quickest route to consent is often a sign designed to fit the building from the start. On an older Bury shopfront, that might mean individual letters on a painted fascia with soft lighting from above, rather than a deep internally lit box. On a modern unit, it might mean keeping illuminated letters within the fascia zone rather than higher up the wall.
We show you the options on a photo of your actual frontage, so you can see how each looks before the drawings are fixed. That way the sign you apply for is one you are happy with, and one that has a fair chance of approval.
Landlord approval is a separate step, and many leases require it. For the sign itself, see fascia signs and illuminated signs, or shop signs Bury.
Opening dates matter here. The council needs time to decide and the sign can only be made after consent is granted, so start early if your shop or office has a fixed opening day. Tell us the date when you first get in touch and we will plan the survey and drawings to give the application as much time as possible.
Frequently asked questions
Which council handles sign applications in Bury?
Bury Council is the local planning authority. We prepare and submit the application, and the council makes the decision.
Does a simple painted sign need consent?
Often not, if it stays within the limits for size and position and is not lit. We check your design and tell you.
How long does the process take?
Allow several weeks for the council to decide, plus time for the survey, drawings and making the sign afterwards.
Is the council fee included?
Yes, we include it in the quote so you can see the full cost.
What happens if the council asks for changes?
We revise the drawings and send them back, and keep you updated throughout.
Can I get advice on a sign I already have?
Yes. If you are unsure whether an existing sign needed consent, send photos and we will tell you what we think and what your options are.
