Advertisement Consent Altrincham

A new sign for an Altrincham shop, cafe or clinic may need advertisement consent from Trafford Council before it can go up, especially if it is lit or the building sits in a sensitive part of town. We draw the sign, prepare the plans and submit the application for you, then make and fit the sign once it is approved.

Why consent comes up so often in Altrincham

The old town around the Market House has older buildings and a strong local character, and signs there are looked at more closely than on a retail park. Illuminated signs, projecting signs and larger fascias are the ones most likely to need an application, wherever the shop is.

Not every sign needs consent. Some fall within the limits allowed without an application. The point is to find out before the sign is made, not after. Our advertisement consent Manchester page explains how the rules work and what goes into an application.

Meeting you at the shop

An application needs accurate drawings, so we visit, measure the frontage, photograph the building and the street, and note what is either side. Altrincham is roughly 35 to 45 minutes from our M8 office depending on traffic, and the rest of the work is done remotely, by email, phone and WhatsApp.

How we handle the application

1

Frontage survey

We measure the building and photograph it from the street.

2

Designing with the rules in mind

The sign is sized, coloured and lit to give it a fair chance of approval.

3

Drawings and plans

We produce the scaled drawings, location plan and site plan.

4

Submission

We submit the application and answer the planning officer’s questions.

5

Making the sign

Once consent is granted, the sign is made and fitted to the approved drawings.

What we prepare for you

  • A scaled drawing of the sign on a photo of your frontage
  • Front and side drawings with sizes, materials and colours
  • Details of how any illumination works
  • Location and site plans
  • The completed application, submitted on your behalf

Questions to answer before you book

A few things help the application go smoothly. Is the building listed? Is your landlord happy with the design? Do you want the sign lit, and if so, from inside or by lights above it? Is anything projecting over the pavement? Your answers shape the design and the drawings.

Landlord permission is separate from council consent and many leases require it. We can send the landlord the same drawings. For the sign itself, see fascia signs, illuminated signs and our shop signs Altrincham page.

Illumination is the detail that most often changes an application. A sign lit from inside, with a bright white face, is treated differently from letters lit softly from above or a non-illuminated painted fascia. On older frontages, a sign with individual letters and a gentle light often fits the building better and is more likely to be accepted than a large lightbox. We talk these choices through with you before the drawings are finalised.

If the council asks for changes during the application, we revise the drawings and send them back, so you are not left handling the planning officer’s questions yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Does every new shop sign in Altrincham need consent?

No. Some signs are allowed without an application if they stay within the limits on size, height and lighting. We check your design and tell you whether an application looks likely to be needed.

Who decides the application?

Trafford Council, as the local planning authority. We prepare and submit the application, and the council makes the decision.

How long should I allow?

Several weeks is normal and it varies with the council’s workload. Build it into your opening plans so the sign is approved before it is needed.

Is the council fee included?

Yes, we include the application fee in your quote so you see the full cost up front.
