Advertisement Consent Leigh
Leigh is in the Wigan borough, so a new lit sign, a projecting sign or a large sign on a building here may need advertisement consent from Wigan Council. We take that off your hands: we design the sign, produce the drawings and plans, submit the application and, once it is approved, make and fit the sign.

Leigh buildings and how signs are judged
Leigh has a mix that makes signage decisions interesting. The town centre has traditional shopfronts and modern units around Spinning Gate. Leigh Spinners Mill is a large historic mill building, and signs on a building with that kind of character are looked at carefully. Out along the A580, logistics and trade buildings want big, clear signs readable from a fast road.
In general, signs that are illuminated, project from the wall, sit high up or are unusually large are the ones that need an application, while modest unlit fascias often do not. Our advertisement consent Manchester page covers the rules in more detail.
How we work with Leigh clients
One site visit gives us what we need: measurements of the frontage, photographs of the building and street, and notes on anything nearby that matters, such as other signs or historic buildings. Leigh is roughly 35 to 45 minutes from our office along the A580, depending on traffic. Everything after that happens by email and phone.

Signs on a historic mill and on the East Lancs Road
For a business in a historic building, the best signs usually work with the building rather than against it: modest boards or individual letters near the entrance, non-illuminated or softly lit, fixed into mortar joints rather than the face of old brick so they can be removed later without scarring. Where a building is listed, listed building consent may also be needed, and we prepare the drawings with that in mind.
On the A580, the questions are different: how big a sign needs to be to be read at speed, how bright it should be at night, and whether a freestanding sign by the entrance is placed where it will not distract drivers. A well-sized, sensibly lit sign is still easy to read and far more likely to be accepted than the largest possible one.
Landlord or mill management approval is separate and often required. For the signs themselves, see fascia signs and illuminated signs, or shop signs Leigh.
Frequently asked questions
Is Leigh covered by Wigan Council for sign applications?
Yes. Leigh is in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, so Wigan Council is the local planning authority. We prepare and submit to them.
We rent a unit in a historic mill. Can we have a sign?
Usually, yes, within the building owner’s rules and any consent needed. We design something that suits the building and check whether an application is required.
How bright can a lit sign be?
Brightness is one of the things the council considers. We specify a sensible level for the location and include it in the application.
Does the price include the council fee?
Yes, the fee is included so your quote is the full cost.
How much time should we allow?
Several weeks for the decision, plus time for the survey and drawings beforehand and for making and fitting afterwards.
What if the council refuses?
We look at the reasons, rework the design and advise whether a revised application is worth making.
