Advertisement Consent Sale
Planning a lit fascia, a projecting sign or a larger sign for a shop, salon or cafe in Sale? It may need advertisement consent from Trafford Council first. We design the sign, prepare the drawings and plans, submit the application for you and make and fit the sign once it is approved.

Signs on School Road and around The Square
School Road is a busy shopping street with homes and offices above many of the shops. Illuminated signs, projecting signs and anything larger than the fascia usually allows are the ones most likely to need an application. Shops in The Square shopping centre will also have landlord rules on signs.
Simple, unlit fascias of a normal size often need no application at all. We check which applies before anything is made. Our advertisement consent Manchester page explains the general rules.
How we work
Sale is roughly 30 to 35 minutes from our office via the A56 or the M60, depending on traffic. We visit to measure and photograph the frontage and street, then prepare the design, drawings and application remotely, sending drafts to you by email.

Lighting a sign with neighbours above
With flats above many School Road shops, the brightness and style of a lit sign matter. A deep lightbox with a bright white face shines into windows above and can draw objections. Individual letters with a soft halo of light behind them, or a fascia lit from small fittings above, give a smarter look, keep light where it is needed and are often easier to get approved.
Salons, cafes and restaurants trading into the evening still need to be seen, and a well-lit sign of the right style does that without glare. We show you options on a photo of your shop before the drawings are finalised, so you choose with the application in mind.
Projecting signs need enough clearance above the pavement and must not stick out too far. We measure these on site and show them clearly on the drawings.
Landlord approval is separate and often required. For the sign itself, see illuminated signs and fascia signs, or shop signs Sale.
Plan the timing early. The council needs several weeks to decide, and the sign is only made once consent is granted, so a shop or salon opening on a fixed date should start the application as soon as the lease is agreed. Tell us the date when you first get in touch and we will plan backwards from it.
A few photos of the frontage from across the road, sent with your first message, help us spot anything that affects the design before we visit, such as neighbouring signs or windows directly above the fascia.
Already trading with a sign and unsure whether it had consent? Send photos and we will give you our view on the best next step.
Frequently asked questions
Trafford Council covers Sale, doesn’t it?
Yes. Sale is part of Trafford, so Trafford Council is where the application goes, and we deal with them directly.
We have flats above our School Road unit. Should we avoid a lit sign?
Not avoid, but choose carefully. Halo-lit letters or small trough lights point light at the sign rather than up into windows, which neighbours and the council tend to prefer.
Does The Square have its own sign rules?
Most shopping centres do. We get the centre’s sign requirements and design to them before preparing the council application.
How much notice does a new salon need?
Allow several weeks for the council plus time for the drawings and production. Starting when you sign the lease gives the best chance of a sign on opening day.
Is the planning fee separate?
No. It is part of the price we quote you.
Could the council attach conditions?
Sometimes, such as limits on brightness or lighting hours. We explain any conditions and make sure the fitted sign follows them.
