Advertisement Consent Stockport
Stockport’s historic old town and its modern centre both bring questions when a new sign goes up. Lit signs, projecting and hanging signs, and signs on older buildings may need advertisement consent from Stockport Council. We design the sign, prepare the drawings, submit the application and fit the sign once it is approved.

Signs in Stockport’s old town
The Underbanks and the streets around the Market Hall are some of the most historic in Stockport, and signs there are looked at closely, particularly on listed buildings and in conservation areas. Illuminated signs and projecting or hanging signs are the most likely to need an application. Merseyway and the newer offices around Stockport Exchange have landlord or estate rules on signs as well.
Many modest, unlit fascias need no application at all. We check which applies before anything is made. Our advertisement consent Manchester page explains the general rules.
How we work
Stockport is roughly 30 minutes from our office via the A6 or the M60, depending on traffic. We visit to measure and photograph the building and the street, then prepare the design, drawings and application remotely, sending drafts to you to check.

Signs that suit historic buildings
On historic shopfronts, signs that work with the building usually look best and are more likely to be approved. That often means a painted timber fascia or individual letters within the original fascia zone, a traditional hanging sign on a bracket, and lighting that is subtle, such as small lamps above the fascia rather than a glowing box. Fixings into mortar joints rather than the face of brick or stone mean the sign can be removed later without scarring the building.
If the building is listed, listed building consent may be needed alongside advertisement consent, and we prepare the drawings with that in mind. Hanging signs need enough clearance above the pavement and must not project too far, which we measure carefully on site.
For modern offices and shopping centre units, estate and landlord rules often matter as much as council rules. We design to both and send drawings to each.
For the sign itself, see fascia signs and illuminated signs, or shop signs Stockport.
Plan the timing early. The council needs several weeks to decide, and the sign can only be made after consent is granted, so if you are opening on a fixed date, start as soon as the lease is agreed. Tell us your date when you first get in touch and we will plan backwards from it.
Send a few photos of the frontage from across the street with your first message. They help us spot anything that affects the design, such as a listed neighbour or a narrow pavement, before we visit.
Frequently asked questions
Does Stockport Council handle these applications?
Yes. Stockport Council is the planning authority for the town, including the old town and Merseyway, and we submit to them for you.
We are on the Underbanks. Is a lit sign out of the question?
Not necessarily, but it needs care. Subtle lighting such as small lamps over a painted fascia is far more likely to suit a historic street than an internally lit box.
How far ahead should a new Stockport shop start?
As early as possible once the lease is agreed. The decision takes several weeks and the sign is only made afterwards, so a fixed opening date needs planning backwards.
What does the council charge?
There is an application fee set nationally. We include it in our price, so there are no separate bills.
Does Merseyway have its own rules too?
Shopping centres usually have a sign standard. We design to it and send the centre the drawings alongside the council application.
Is a traditional hanging sign treated differently?
Its height above the pavement, how far it projects and whether it is lit all count. We measure these on site and show them clearly on the drawings.
