Signs that suit an old market town

Ramsbottom’s centre is made up of stone and brick buildings with traditional shop fronts, and much of its trade comes from people strolling between Bridge Street, the station and the cafes. A loud plastic panel can look out of place here, while a well proportioned painted fascia or a set of individual letters sits comfortably and still gets noticed. The sign has to work for a visitor who has never heard of you and for a regular who just needs to spot your door.

Older buildings also bring practical issues. Fascia boards may be timber that has been painted many times, stonework can be soft, and there may be little room above the window. Signs may need advertisement consent from the council, especially when illuminated or in a conservation area, and we check this with you before anything is made. If you rent, your landlord’s permission may be needed as well.

Materials and fitting standards are the same as for our shop signs in Manchester.

The survey visit and fitting

Every sign starts with a visit. A member of our team comes to your premises by arrangement, roughly 35 to 40 minutes from our M8 office via the M60 and M66, depending on traffic. We measure the fascia and windows, check what the board or wall is made of and whether it will hold fixings, look for a power supply if you want lighting, and note access, parking and whether the pavement is narrow enough to need a tower rather than ladders.

After that, designs and changes go back and forth by email or WhatsApp. The sign is made through our production network and our fitters install it, usually early in the day so you can trade normally.

Steps from first photo to fitted sign

1

Photos and a first chat

Send pictures of your frontage and tell us what you have in mind, so we can suggest options.

2

Measured survey

We visit, measure, check fixings and access, then send a fixed quote.

3

Visuals on your building

You see the design laid over a photo of your shop, at true scale.

4

Consent check and sign-off

We discuss whether consent or landlord approval is likely and supply drawings if an application is needed.

5

Production and installation

The sign is made in the agreed materials and our fitters put it up and clear away.

Choosing a sign for a Ramsbottom frontage

A few questions decide most of the design before colours come into it.

  • Who reads it, and from where Walkers on a narrow pavement read from a couple of metres, so modest lettering works. A frontage facing a wider road needs larger text.
  • Daytime or evening trade Bars and restaurants open late may want discreet trough lights or halo-lit letters. Our illuminated signs page explains the choices.
  • A hanging or projecting sign Visitors walking along the street see a projecting sign before the fascia. Bracket fixings need a solid wall.
  • What goes on the glass Opening hours, dog-friendly notes and a menu summary suit the window. Window graphics or frosted panels carry this without cluttering the fascia.
  • Pavement boards An A-board helps on a side street, but check with the council and keep the path clear.

What do customers ask before ordering?

Can a new sign keep the traditional look of my Ramsbottom shop front?

Yes. Many frontages here suit painted boards, serif lettering and muted colours, and we can design in that style. Built-up letters on a painted fascia are another option that looks period without being fake. We show you visuals on your own building before anything is ordered.

How do you fit a sign on a busy weekend street?

We plan fitting for a quieter weekday where we can, usually early, and keep the pavement clear with barriers if needed. For most fascias the work takes a few hours, so you can open as normal.

Do you make signs for market stalls and pop-up events?

We do. Printed banners, lightweight panels and A-boards travel easily and can match your shop or van branding, so returning customers recognise you at a market or event.

How long does an aluminium composite fascia last?

Printed composite panels are weather resistant and typically last many years on a north-facing wall, a little less in full sun. We use outdoor-grade vinyl and laminate, and advise on cleaning so colours stay sharp.
