Getting the frontage right on a Didsbury street

Shop units around the village vary a great deal. Some have deep timber fascias, others a shallow band of wall, often with flats above. Owners here usually want a sign that looks considered rather than loud: a flat aluminium panel in a muted colour, built-up letters, or a hanging sign that people can spot from further along the pavement.

Restaurants and bars on Burton Road face a different question, because much of their trade arrives after dark, which brings in lighting. Illuminated signs, and signs in a conservation area, may need advertisement consent from the council, and landlord permission may be needed as well. We check this with you before anything is made. Materials, finishes and the full range of sign types are covered on our Manchester shop signs page.

Survey visits and fitting days in Didsbury

This is the service where we always come out. A member of our team visits, measures the fascia and window areas, works out what the wall or existing board is made of and where sound fixing points are, and looks at access: whether a tower is needed, how wide the pavement is and when it is quietest.

From our M8 office the drive is roughly 30 to 35 minutes through the city centre and down Wilmslow Road or the A5103, depending on traffic. Our fitters agree a fitting time with you, often before opening, and artwork approvals happen by email or WhatsApp in between visits.

Step by step, from photos to fitted sign

1

Send photos and ideas

Call or WhatsApp us with pictures of the frontage and your logo. We talk through sign types and lighting.

2

Measured site survey

We record exact sizes, wall construction, fixing points, power for any lighting and access for fitting.

3

Scaled visual and permissions

You receive a visual of the sign on a photo of your shop. Together we confirm whether consent or landlord approval is needed before ordering.

4

Production to measured sizes

Once you sign off the artwork, the sign is made through our production network in the agreed materials.

5

Fitting and finishing

Our fitters remove the old sign where agreed, fix the new one level and secure.

Your sign package

  • An on-site survey with measurements and photographs
  • A scaled visual showing the sign on your actual frontage
  • Help with consent and landlord questions before production
  • A sign made to measured sizes in materials you have approved
  • Removal of the old sign, where agreed
  • Fitting by our fitters, with lit signs set up and tested
  • Matching window lettering or an A-board if you want them

Sign choices by type of Didsbury business

These are hypothetical suggestions, not descriptions of real premises.

  • Restaurants and bars: halo-lit letters or a trough-lit fascia so the name reads in the evening, plus a menu case or pavement board. Our illuminated signs page explains the options.
  • Estate and letting agents: a clean fascia, a projecting sign for passing drivers and window space planned around property cards.
  • Clinics and therapists: a discreet fascia or wall plaque, opening times on the door and frosted film on treatment room windows for privacy.
  • Salons: a fascia that matches your colours inside, with lettering on the glass so the name is visible even when the shutter is half down.
  • Offices above shops: a door plaque and a small hanging sign at street level so visitors find the entrance.

For glass, our window graphics service covers printed and cut vinyl. On the survey we also check practical points: whether the name fits at a readable size from across the road, how the sign sits next to neighbouring fronts, and whether there is a power supply near the fascia for lighting.

What do customers ask before ordering?

Does a new sign in Didsbury Village need council permission?

It depends on the sign, the building and where it is. Signs may need advertisement consent from the council, especially when illuminated or in a conservation area, and we check this with you before anything is made. Landlord permission may also be needed. This is general information, so take advice for your own premises.

Can fitting on Burton Road happen outside our opening hours?

We agree the fitting time with you during the survey. Many hospitality clients choose an early morning before staff arrive, when the pavement is quieter too.

Which fascia material lasts longest?

Aluminium composite panel with applied or printed vinyl is a common, durable choice. Built-up acrylic or metal letters add depth, and painted timber suits a traditional front. We explain the trade-offs in appearance, upkeep and lifespan once we have seen the building.

Can our existing sign frame or lighting be reused?

Sometimes. The survey checks the condition of the frame, the fixings behind it and any light fittings. If they are sound, a new face panel or lettering can go over them; if not, we explain why replacing them is the safer option.
