Signs that suit how people pass Wilmslow shop fronts

Grove Street is pedestrianised, so nobody reads a sign there from a car. Shoppers walk past within a few metres of the glass, often at an angle, which means a fascia high above the door is only half the job. A projecting sign at right angles to the wall catches people walking along the street, and window lettering at eye level tells them what is inside, when you are open and how to book.

Water Lane and Alderley Road are busier after dark, with restaurants and bars trading into the evening. Here lighting matters. Halo-lit letters, an illuminated projecting sign or a trough light over a painted fascia keep the name readable once the shops close. Signs may need advertisement consent from the council, especially when illuminated or in a conservation area, and we check this with you before anything is made. If you rent the unit, your landlord may need to approve the design too.

Clinics, agents and financial firms usually want something quieter: brushed metal or acrylic letters, frosted manifestation on glass for privacy, and a neat plaque by the door. You can see the wider range on our shop signs page for Manchester.

The site visit and how fitting works

We do not quote a fascia from a photo alone. One of our team visits by arrangement to measure the frontage and windows, photograph it, and look at what the existing sign is fixed into, whether timber, render, brick or an old box sign that needs removing. We note where fixings can go, whether there is a power supply for lighting, and how a ladder or tower can be set up without blocking a narrow pavement. The drive from our M8 office takes roughly 40 to 50 minutes via the A34 or M56, depending on traffic.

Production runs through our production network, and our fitters install the finished sign, seal the fixings and clear away the old one.

Production and fitting

Once you sign off the artwork, the sign is made and our fitters install it at a time agreed with you.

What is included in a shop sign job?

  • A measured survey of the frontage, with photos kept on file
  • Artwork set up from your logo, or a fresh layout if you do not have one
  • A scaled mock-up showing the sign on your building
  • Drawings to support consent or landlord approval where required
  • Removal of the old sign and making good the fixing holes
  • Fitting by our fitters, with lit signs connected for a qualified electrician to finish where needed

Choosing a sign type for different Wilmslow premises

The right sign depends on where you trade and who walks past.

  • Pedestrian street units: a slim fascia, a double-sided projecting sign and bold window vinyl showing opening hours
  • Evening venues: halo-lit or face-lit letters, plus menu holders and lettering readable from across the road
  • Clinics and offices: raised letters on a stand-off panel, frosted film on lower glass and a door plaque
  • Retail park units around Handforth Dean: larger letters and high contrast, because the sign is read from a car park

For glass work on its own, see window graphics. If you want the name to glow, our illuminated signs page explains the lighting options.

What do customers ask before ordering?

Can you fit a sign on Grove Street when it is busy?

Yes, but we plan for it. Because the street is pedestrianised, we agree a fitting time with you when footfall is lighter, often early morning, and keep a clear zone around the ladder or tower.

Do I need permission for a new sign in Wilmslow?

Sometimes. Lit signs, larger signs and signs in sensitive areas may need advertisement consent from the council, and leased units often need landlord approval. We talk this through at the survey and supply drawings, but you should confirm the position for your premises before production starts.

What materials last best on a shop front?

Aluminium composite panel is a dependable choice for fascias because it stays flat and resists the weather. Acrylic and stainless steel suit raised letters. For windows, cast vinyl holds its colour longer than calendered films. We recommend materials once we have seen which way the frontage faces.

Can you match our sign to our website and printed menus?

Yes. We work from your existing logo files and colour references so the sign, windows and printed items look like one brand. If the logo needs tidying, our designers redraw it as clean vector artwork.
