Stockport’s historic old town and newer centre
The Underbanks and the streets around the Market Hall are among the oldest in Stockport, with historic shopfronts, timber fascias and hanging signs on brackets. Signs here need gentle handling so old timber and brickwork are not damaged. Merseyway shopping centre has its own rules for contractors, and newer offices around Stockport Exchange carry name boards and graphics on glass.
Industrial estates and trade units have larger signs fixed high on cladding. Our sign removal Manchester page describes the general service.
Survey and quote
Stockport is roughly 30 minutes from our office via the A6 or the M60, depending on traffic. Simple signs can be priced from photos; signs on historic frontages, lit signs and anything high are best seen in person.

Historic shopfronts on the Underbanks
On historic frontages, the sign is often fixed to a timber fascia that is part of the original shopfront. Old screws can be rusted solid and the timber soft around them. Forcing them out splits the board. We cut or drill out stubborn fixings, support the sign as it comes away, and leave the fascia as intact as possible for the next business.
Hanging signs on iron brackets are common in the old town. If the bracket is sound, many new tenants want to keep it, and we leave it in place with its fixings checked. If the building is listed, check with the council before any work on the frontage.
In Merseyway, we follow the centre’s rules on working hours and paperwork and agree a time with management. Office signs near the station often involve vinyl on glazing, which we soften and peel so the glass is left clean.
New tenant? We can remove the old sign and fit yours in one job using shop signs and fascia signs. The shop signs Stockport page covers new signs locally.
On industrial estates and trade units, signs are higher and fixed to cladding. Letters and panels come off one fixing at a time so the sheet is not torn, and we agree with the site where access equipment can stand and how vehicles will pass while we work.
Window lettering and old film are removed in the same visit. We soften the vinyl, scrape it off with blades made for glass and clean the adhesive away, so the windows are clear for the next business.
Want to keep an old sign for its history? Tell us beforehand and we will lower it carefully and leave it with you.
What do customers ask before ordering?
Can you remove a sign from a historic shop on the Underbanks?
Yes. We take fixings out carefully to protect the timber and brickwork, and check about listed status first.
Do you work in Merseyway?
Yes. We follow the centre’s rules on hours and paperwork.
Can I keep the bracket for my hanging sign?
Yes, if it is sound. We leave it in place with its fixings checked.
Do you disconnect lit signs?
No. A qualified electrician isolates the supply first.
Can you work outside opening hours?
Yes. Evening and weekend removal can be arranged.
Do you take the waste?
